Land Rover has bid adieu to the Freelander and rolled out a new compact premium SUV to its lineup - the LR2.

The LR2 bears a striking resemblance to its older siblings the Range Rover and LR3, albeit with an obvious size difference. The LR2 features all of Land Rover's typical attributes, such as excellent off-road performance, several advanced technological features and a roomy interior.

The new LR2 has a transversely-mounted 3.2-litre V6 engine that's mated to a new 6-speed automatic transmission that has a manual sequential shift mode, allowing the driver to change gears at his or her leisure. There is also a selectable sport mode for 'livelier' performance according to Land Rover.

The company is touting both the onroad and offroad performance of its new vehicle, typical of compact SUVs.

"LR2 combines the advantages of a premium sedan -- such as polished ride, accomplished performance, an attractive cabin and ease-of-use -- with the attributes of a robust SUV, including go-anywhere ability, toughness, stadium seating, cabin versatility and spaciousness," says Phil Popham, Land Rover's managing director. "We believe that no other compact SUV gets closer to blending these best-of-both-worlds abilities."

The body is a five-door monocoque structure, with a high level of torsional rigidity which again benefits refinement, comfort and on-road handling just as much as maneouvering offroad. The suspension is fully independent and features stability control systems, including Roll Stability Control, which helps mitigate the risk of a rollover in extreme conditions.

Of course, the LR2 wouldn't be a true Land Rover if it didn't include the company's Terrain Response system. This system, which comes standard on all LR2's, makes off-roading easier by allowing the driver to select different suspension modes depending on the driving situation at hand.
