Can there ever be too many 911s?

For Porsche, the answer is probably no.

Though the stunning Carrera GT ended production recently, the company has announced the new 911 Targa 4 and 911 Targa 4S for 2007. The Targa version most noticeably features a large, sliding-glass roof and glass rear hatch, as well as a rear body profile that is 44 millimeters (1.73 in.) wider than the standard 911 Carrera and exclusively with permanent all-wheel drive.

The retractable glass roof can be retracted at any vehicle speed in seven seconds. It's made with thick glass and is specially sealed to help reduce wind noise. The glass itself is also lighter than its predecessor.

The 911 Targa 4 is powered by Porsche's flat-six, 3.6-litre Boxer engine, delivering 325-horsepower. It will accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 5.3 sec. and reach a top test-track speed of 280 km/h. The more powerful Targa 4S variant features a 3.8-liter engine producing 355 horsepower. This model sprints from 0-100 km/h in 4.9 sec. and has a top test-track speed of 288 km/h. In both Targa models, power is routed via a standard six-speed manual gearbox, though an optional five-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission, which allows gear changes via steering wheel-mounted rocker switches, is available.

The Porsche 911 Targa 4 and 911 Targa 4S go on sale in North America in November. The Targa 4 will cost $119,100 CDN while the Targa 4S will come in at $133,200 in Canada.
