Volkswagen has announced the name of its new compact SUV after readers of the Autobild group were given the task of voting from five different choices.

The VW Tiguan will hit showrooms as a 2008 model.

The name was a 'clear winner,' according to Volkswagen, over the other four choices developed by Volkswagen marketing - the Nanuk, Namib, Rockton and Samun. The winner received around 350,000 votes total.

The company says that 'travel, adventure and excitement are associated with the exotic sounding name.' The Tiguan is being touted as the Touareg's little brother; it will be suited to urban environments as well as rough terrain. It was first shown as the 2006 Concept A design study.
