One of the worst-kept secrets in the automotive industry has become reality with Volvo announcing that the C30 coupe is headed to production at the end of 2006. It will be officially unveiled to the public at the Paris Motor Show in September 2006.

The C30 is aimed at a specific demographic - young people with active lifestyles. It retains many styling cues from the C30 concept that appeared at the 2006 North American International Auto Show, including angled headlamps and a low, wide grille. Viewed from the side, the the distinct wheel housings and sloping roof give the new C30 a fast silhouette, enhanced by the boat-shaped side windows. The rear shoulders are powerfully rounded and accentuated by horseshoe-shaped taillamps - making the C30 unmistakeable when driving behind it according to Volvo.

The interior features comfortable seating for four, despite being the smallest vehicle in the Volvo lineup - by far. The C30 is 425 centimeters (167 inches) long, making it a full 22 centimeters (8.5 inches) shorter than the Volvo S40. The rear seats are centred slightly for a feeling of space and better forward visibility and the 'floating' centre stack makes an appearance as well.

Volvo says that one of the big attractions of the C30 is its customization. The base version has three upholstery options and two engines are also available.

Speaking of which, the engine choices coming to Canada include a a 2.4-litre 5-cylinder engine delivering 168-horsepower or a more powerful 2.5-litre turbocharged 5-cylinder engine delivering 218-horsepower.

Though Volvo is touting the quality of the base audio system, an optional premium sound system is available, with a digital 5x130W ICE Power amplifier from Alpine, Dolby Pro Logic II Surround, and 10 loudspeakers from Danish manufacturer Dynaudio.

In regards to safety, the C30 is available with the Blind Spot Information System, which helps drivers identify other vehicles at the rear sides of the car. The coupe incorporates the same energy-absorbing structure as the S40 and V50, and it uses four different types of steel. It includes front and side airbags and an inflatable curtain as well as volvo's Whiplash Protection System.

Volvo Canada has set prices for the at $27,495 for the entry-level C30 2.4i. The sporty T5 version has a $31,995 starting price. The C30 2.4i can be equipped with either a $2,150 Premium Package (electronic climate control, heated front seats, leather steering wheel, leather shift knob, power driver seat and aluminum inlays) or a $3,000 Sport Package (same equipment as the Premium Package, plus headlamp washers, fog lights, front spoiler, 17-inch wheels and tires).

For the T5, the $3,400 Sport Package combines heated front seats, power driver seat, headlamp washers, Homelink, bi-xenon headlights, auto-dimming rear-view mirror with compass, 17-inch wheels and tires, and a sport-tuned chassis.

Both the 2.4i and the T5 can be equipped with a DynAudio package that combines Dolby Pro-Logic II Surround Sound, 10 DynAudio speakers, an in-dash 6-CD changer, a 650-Watt digital amplifier and an auxiliary input jack for external players. Prices start at $1,250 for the 2.4i and $1,000 for the T5.
