Subaru's embrace of all-wheel drive technology long ago dispelled its reputation for quirkiness and, in the process, put in on a par with premium European marques such as Audi.

To that end, Subaru tops off the Legacy lineup for 2007 with the 2.5GT spec.B, with upgrades in performance and interior materials.

To match a subdued metallic charcoal exterior, the interior features new Charcoal Grey leather-trimmed upholstery with Dusk Blue Alcantara suede inserts, providing a high-grip surface (for handling exercises) with excellent stain- and wear-resistance. Though it doesn't look it, it is reportedly easy to clean and breathes better than leather, for enhanced comfort in warm and cold weather.

Eight-way power driver's seat with two-position memory, DVD-based navigation system, an upgraded audio system with a new control panel, and a new 40/20/40-split flat-folding rear seat with a truck pass-through are also standard.

Differentiation from the "common" 2.5GT sedan is achieved through the use of aluminum-alloy pedals, 3-spoke MOMO leather-wrapped steering wheel with integrated audio controls (and shift up/down rocker switches on automatic models) and ‘spec.B' floor mats.

All Legacy 2.5GTs get dual-zone automatic climate control, in-dash six-CD changer, power heated front sport seats, power moonroof and heated exterior mirrors with integrated LED turn-signals.

A standard SRS WOW audio system offers performance on a par with most competitors' premium (optional) systems, with XM satellite capability and MP3 and Windows Media Audio (WMA) playback. A new standard auxiliary audio input jack located in the centre console allows direct plug-and-play from most portable audio devices.

The SRS WOW system enhances listening pleasure with TruBass technology that improves the bass performance of each speaker, yielding results similar to the output of a sub-woofer without taking up the room needed for one.

Power is supplied by a turbocharged intercooled 2.5-litre DOHC horizontally-opposed (boxer) 4-cylinder. Due to new horsepower ratings, it is now rated at 243 hp at 6,000 rpm and 241 lbs.ft. of torque at 3,600 rpm (that's why you may have noticed that engines are reportedly making less power, though they didn't change). Subaru's variable valve timing system (AVCS for Active Valve Control System) helps boost power while reducing fuel consumption.

Of note on the new GTs is the new Subaru Intelligent Drive (SI-DRIVE) technology that allows the driver to custom-tailor engine performance, control and efficiency by choosing one of three selectable modes – Intelligent (I), Sport (S) and Sport Sharp (S#) – using a rotary dial on the centre console.

SI-DRIVE enables three distinctively different modes of vehicle performance characteristics by regulating the electronic control unit (ECU) as well as the transmission control unit (TCU) on automatic models, and by fine-tuning the electronically controlled throttle.

When Intelligent mode is selected (ideally in stop-and-go traffic), the system reduces engine torque and maximum power and switches to a more relaxed throttle response curve. By controlling throttle angle and response of the Electronic Throttle Control system, SI-DRIVE restrains peak output by about 20 per cent, and peak torque is limited to 228 lbs.ft, resulting in improved fuel economy (reportedly by as much as 10 percent).

In Sport mode, the performance of the 2.5 GT spec.B benefits from quick throttle responses and powerful, linear acceleration, making it ideal for driving on freeways and suburban streets or for climbing mountain roads.

In Sport Sharp mode, SI-DRIVE modifies the engine's electronic throttle mapping to deliver lightning-quick throttle response and more power, sooner. It is ideal for tackling twisty roads and for merging or overtaking other vehicles on the highway with confidence.

Most drivers probably won't notice much of difference switching between modes, so we'll report on real world data once we've had a chance with the car on our usual test roads. Our brief exposure to Legacy 2.5GT spec.B showed it to be a competent and potentially powerful sport sedan, but the Legacy GT was already that prior to this latest version.
