The next-generation 2007 Honda CR-V is a lot bigger than the outgoing model, but it may not be very obvious to the naked eye thanks to its exterior styling, which goes through some big changes.

The most obvious change is the placement of the spare tire, which has for years hung from the rear bumper. It now resides under the rear cargo area, allowing for better visibility and improved aesthetics. A new double grille has been added and an arched window helps give the CR-V more of an upscale, distinctive look. The body has increased in width by 1.4 inches.

The new CR-V benefits from the latest noise absorption materials to reduce noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) from the engine and road. The vehicle has a fully independent suspension comprised of a front MacPherson strut layout and a rear multi-link, making it as much a rigid, fun to drive SUV as it is a comfortable one, according to Honda.

Honda also improved on the previous generation's safety by adding even more standard safety equipment. All CR-V models come with 4-wheel antilock braking system, front side airbags with passenger-side occupant position detection system, front airbags and front side airbags, side curtain airbags with rollover sensor, vehicle stability assist and daytime running lights. Real time 4WD is also available on all trim levels. In addition, the body of the CR-V features a pedestrian safety design to help lessen injuries to pedestrians who may be hit in a collision.

All CR-Vs are powered by a standard 2.4-litre 4-cylinder engine (which allows for an increase to 166-horsepower and 161 lbs.-ft. of torque this year) mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission.

The 2007 CR-V now has more standard interior features and extra optional features according to Honda. One of the more notable additions is an available navigation system that combines with a voice recognition system that is capable of entering and recognizing numbers, street names and cities. A rear backup camera and seven speaker audio system with subwoofer are also available with the nav system. Also standard in each trim level are auxiliary jacks, allowing for portable music device playback through the audio system.

In the back of the CR-V, a dual deck cargo shelf allows for more storage possibilities, with the top shelf being able to hold up to 20 lbs. of cargo.

The 2007 CR-V will be built for the first time in North America at Honda's East Liberty Plant in Ohio.
