Acura has taken the Canadian-exclusive compact CSX sedan to a new high, with the introduction of the high-performance 2007 CSX Type-S, priced at $33,400.

"The new CSX Type-S model will serve as a gateway product to Acura's performance heritage for those Canadians who want both affordable luxury and high performance," said Jim Miller, executive vice president, Honda Canada. "There was a time when the 100-horsepower-per-litre benchmark was an exclusive calling card of race car engines."

Power for the new Acura CSX Type-S is supplied by a new 197-hp 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine that features "intelligent" valve-control systems (i-VTEC) for optimum engine performance and superior economy (reportedly 10.2 litres per 100 km in the city and 6.8 on the highway). It is mated to a close ratio 6-speed manual gearbox.

Also on tap for the new CSX Type-S is drive-by-wire throttle control, 4-wheel disc brakes, vehicle stability assist with traction control and a speed-sensitive electric power steering (EPS) system for sporty driving performance.

The CSX Type-S sport-tuned suspension includes stiffer springs, firmer damping and upgraded stabilizer bars (increased from 24 to 27 millimeters up front, and from 11 to 17 millimeters in the rear). Unique 17-inch alloy wheels are shod with performance-rated 215/45 R17 tires.

Exterior unique cues include Type-S badging, a rear wing spoiler with integrated LED brake light, fog lights.

The interior features six airbags, leather-trimmed seating with high-contrast stitching and embossed Type-S identification, metallic-finish pedals, and Type-S embossed floor mats. By night, the ambient light takes on a "performance" red hue.

Standard equipment includes a satellite-linked Navigation System with bilingual voice recognition for up to 600 voice commands (also used for climate control and audio systems), a 350-watt audio system with seven speakers (including an 8-inch sub-woofer), MP3/WMA audio file capability and an auxiliary jack for music playback devices such as iPods.
