If there were ever any doubt about Cadillac's global aspirations, they were quickly dispelled with the introduction of the European BLS in the spring of 2006.

"The BLS was developed for luxury customers, with particular attention to the demands of the European and other international markets," said Jim Taylor, Cadillac general manager. "BLS is an important addition to our Cadillac portfolio, and it provides a critical entry with which to grow our business in key international markets. The distinctive styling will attract customers daring to be different."

Ironically, at a time when Cadillac was pushing the rear-drive CTS in North America, it decided to introduce a front-wheel drive car to Europe. That idiosyncrasy was quickly glossed over with the announcement of Cadillac's first turbo-diesel variant.

The 150-hp 1.9-litre 4-cylinder engine, with common-rail direct injection, is fitted with a maintenance-free diesel particulate filter and complies with Euro 4 emissions standards.

Three gasoline engines are also offered: two turbocharged 2.0-litre "fours" (putting out 175 and 210 hp) and a high-tech 255-hp 2.8-litre 6-cylinder unit with twin-scroll turbocharger and variable phasing of the intake camshafts. The BLS offers five- or six-speed manual transmissions and five- or six-speed automatic transmissions, depending on engine type.

The suspension features McPherson struts up front and a 4-link rear axle designed to handle the power outputs of the powerful engines. Chassis tuning ensures dynamic handling performance without compromising comfort.

BLS design was conceived by an international team of designers led by Ed Welburn, GM's Vice President of Design. The vehicle has clear, sharply defined contours, striking wedge shape and an elegant interior.

"The most striking feature is the vertical lines at the front and rear," said Welburn. "The V-shaped chrome-plated grille, a Cadillac cue, is picked up again by the trunk lid (held between Cadillac-standard vertical taillights). The large side faces communicate a sense of strength and solidity."

The BLS also features jewelled headlamps, fog lamps integrated into the body-coloured bumper and a wide air intake below the grille. A narrow chrome strip runs along the side windows. The center high-mounted full-width brake light is made up of LEDs for better brilliance and quicker lighting.

The BLS interior is highlighted by a 3-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel and the luxury-standard analog clock in the center stack. Technological features include high-quality Bose audio units, DVD navigation system with touch screen operation, and Bluetooth-enabled cell phone system with a hands-free kit.
