Deciding on a vehicle to fulfil the day-to-day needs of a family can be a daunting task for consumers.

For AJAC members evaluating the category for best new family car over $30,000 at this year's TestFest, the challenge was equally demanding.

There was a nearly $12,000 spread in the pricing, with the 2007 Nissan Maxima topping the list at $45,048.

Surprisingly, perhaps, anchoring the other end of the scale was the 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid, listed at $33,140 as tested. The next rung up the price ladder was the Saturn Aura at $34,450, followed by the Kia Amanti at $36,995 and the Volkswagen Passat Wagon, listed at $41,325.

All provide plenty of room for a family of four or five, plus a number of amenities consumers expect in this near-luxury segment.

Consumers also expect the latest safety technologies and all the entries are loaded. The Amanti, however, stands out by providing eight standard air bags.

The ride and handling of all five was acceptable, although the Maxima had more of a driver's flavour.

The Aura, too, fits in the "driver's" category, with a ride and handling response that felt comfortable whether you were cruising on the highway or pushing it through tight turns with a bit of vigour.

Adding to this spirited personality, the Aura had steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters to control the six-speed transmission.

The Maxima, with 255 hp and 252 lb.-ft. of torque from its smooth 3.5-L V6, was quickest to 100 km/h with a time of 6.8 seconds. It was also quickest in the 80-to-120 km/h passing drill, completing the move in 5.4 seconds.

The Amanti had the most muscle, with 264 hp and 260 lb.-ft. of torque from the its 3.8-L V6. However, its hefty weight took a toll on the track.

The Aura also had impressive power; its 3.6-L V6 produces 252 hp and 251 lb.-ft. of torque

The Camry Hybrid, with 187 net power and 138 lb.-ft. of torque, needed the most time to reach 100 km/h and was slowest to accelerate from 80 to 120 km/h.

Of course, where the Camry showed its speed was passing gas pumps. It's rated at 5.7 L/100 km.

You could pick any one of these sedans as the family's hauler, but don't be surprised when the results of the voting are revealed Nov. 21 if Saturn's new Aura tops the list.

It has all the attributes of a winner.
