Aston Martin unveils a convertible version of its V8 Vantage Roadster at the 2006 Los Angeles Auto Show.

"The V8 Vantage Roadster is a pure sports car that heightens the senses and provides a dynamically thrilling driving experience," enthuses Aston Martin Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Ulrich Bez. "The Vantage Roadster adds to the unbeatable thrill of open air motoring and by combining engineering excellence, technological innovation and physical perfection, will ensure every journey is one to remember."

The Vantage Roadster blends classic Aston Martin design cues with a low purposeful stance. The hand-trimmed interior is finished in the finest-quality natural materials. Built at Aston Martin's global headquarters at Gaydon, near Warwickshire in the UK, it joins a current Aston Martin line-up that includes the V8 Vantage Coupe, the DB9 and the flagship Vanquish S.

The Vantage Roadster represents the latest evolution of Aston Martin's amalgamation of craft and technology. From the beautifully hand stitched leather seats to the hand-finished body, to the ultra-modern V8 engine, hand-assembled at a dedicated, high-technology facility in Cologne, Germany.

The 3-layer fabric top gives a coupe-like profile when up, and putting it down unveils a set of leather speedster bulkheads behind the headrests, which serve to blend the interior into the exterior. Operated at the push of a button, the top is neatly stowed beneath a tonneau cover. It will reportedly work in just 18 seconds at speeds of up to 50km/h.

Aston Martin had always expected to make the V8 Vantage Roadster, and developed it alongside the Coupe launched in 2005. The two share Aston's unique bonded-aluminum VH (Vertical Horizontal) architecture. Lightweight alloys, magnesium and advanced composites are used for the body, in order to further lower weight and increase rigidity.

Despite the additional top mechanism and added body stiffeners, the weight increase between coupe and convertible is minimal. The overall footprint of the car is nearly identical to that of the coupe.

Vantage Roadster will be available with a choice of transmissions – a standard 6-speed manual or the new Sportshift automated manual with steering-wheel paddles for easy, swift gear changes.

Aston Martin claims zero to 100km/h times of 5.0 seconds, with a potential maximum speed of 280km/h.
