STUTTGART, Germany -- Recently, Smart held the official media announcement of the 2007 Smart ForTwo in Stuttgart, Germany.

While the current ForTwo has evoked an almost cult-like following, selling more than 750,000 worldwide since 1998, some aspects of the vehicle have proven an acquired taste.

With the future of the Smart company hanging in the balance, the goal of designing the 2007 car was to deliver a new vehicle that preserves what customers love about the current Smart. The company has done a stellar job.

While the exterior is recognized as a ForTwo, it is not cartoonish anymore.

The tridion safety cell is stronger, but the appearance is sleeker and more stylized.

The new design encompasses a hood that opens for service -- a welcome change for Smart enthusiasts. No more fiddling with two small access doors in the front.

The car is 19.5-cm longer and 4.3-cm wider.

The Pulse and Passion coupes will come with a 1.1-square-metre polycarbonate roof, half of which is transparent.

The new cabrio roof opens automatically in 14 seconds and can open or close while driving on the freeway.

The "biggest" change is the trunk. The area behind the seats has increased from 150 to 220L.

The new drive train includes a 1-L, three-cylinder Mitsubishi gas engine. Europe will see three versions ranging from 61 to 84 bhp. Also available in Europe is a 45 bhp diesel engine that will achieve 3.5 L/100k mileage.

Although it is unknown which engines Canada will announce, the first will be gas.

Another major improvement is the transmission. While still an automated manual transmission with a dry clutch under computer control, the new design is a five-speed with direct access from any gear to any gear.

While the current ForTwo performs well in accident tests, the new ForTwo is even better, achieving a Four-star EuroNCAP, as well as compliance with all U.S. and Canadian crash requirements.

Canadian delivery of the new ForTwo will start in October 2007.
