LOS ANGELES — Buick's first luxury crossover SUV, the 2008 Enclave is purposely built on all-new architecture and powered by one of GM's most potent V6s ever.

Enclave combines the principles of a crossover with smooth modern lines, with the Buick cues of understated luxury and an elegant, well-crafted interior. It is capable of carrying up to eight people and still offer 18.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the upright third-row seat – a trunk capacity of some large sedans. With all rear seats down, the cargo area expands to 116.2 cubic feet.

Other Buick cues include the traditional waterfall grille (in black chrome and inset with a bold tri-shield emblem) and front fender portholes (actually on the hood above the fenders).

"Enclave is the new face of Buick and everything we want in future Buicks," said Buick General Manager Steve Shannon. "It's an absolutely stunning, high-quality crossover SUV that delivers all the product attributes that define the new Buick – a confident ride, relevant technologies, more luxury features, elegant design and a quiet, comfortable and well-crafted interior. These are the hallmark traits of future Buicks."

Enclave will reportedly be available in traditional Buick CX and CXL trim levels in either front-wheel or all-wheel drive. Power will come from a new 275-horsepower 3.6-litre dual-overhead cam V6 featuring variable valve timing (VVT) and mated to Buick's first 6-speed automatic (with grade-shift logic). Jointly developed at GM technical centers in Australia , Germany , Sweden and North America, the engine uses full 4-cam phasing, rapid data processing and torque-based engine management to optimize power, economy and emissions. Properly equipped, Enclave can tow up to 4,500 lbs.

Enclave rides on a 3,021 mm wheelbase and has a wide, confident stance with 18-inch wheels pushed out to the corners (19-inchers are also available). GM's StabiliTrak electronic stability system is standard, as are traction control, anti-lock brakes and tire-pressure monitors.

The new vehicle also features items uncommon or unavailable in competitors' vehicles, including a second-row seat console that contributes to a flat load floor when the seats are folded. The armrest slides back and forth, and the storage area is equipped with a pull-out tray that can be removed to reveal a deep space for a couple half-litre bottles or other tall items. Enclave also features a power-operated liftgate, sliding second-row seats and a DVD-based entertainment system with one of the segment's largest display screens.

Other notable features include parking assist (granted through the use of auto-tilt side mirrors, audible warnings from rear bumper sensors as well as a rear back-up camera), high-intensity discharge headlamps that turn with the front wheels, heated windshield washer fluid, power folding outside mirrors with integrated turn signals and remote starter.

Inside, there is a voice-activated and touch-screen navigation system, power tilt and telescoping steering wheel, Bose 5.1 surround sound system with XM satellite radio receiver, OnStar with Turn-By-Turn voice-activated navigation, and front airbags, front seat side-impact airbags and full side air curtain bags.

Seating is provided in the form of two front bucket seats, a standard 60/40-split bench seat in the rear that can reportedly accommodate three adults, and two fore/aft adjustable captain's chairs in the middle with an optional centre console. An adjustable second-row 60/40-split bench (three passengers) seat is also available. A "Smart Slide" feature allows the middle seats to be moved forward at the pull of a handle, for quick and easy access to the rear.

More than two dozen storage cubbies on the instrument panel, centre console and covered rear cargo convenience centre allow stowables to be hidden away from prying eyes.

Built in Lansing, Michigan, Enclaves will arrive in showrooms in summer 2007, with prices set at that time.
