Heated and cooled cupholders are so yesterday. There's something new around the corner for the Chrysler Sebring that will help keep the driver heated or cooled, and we're not just talking about an automatic climate control system.

The company announced that the redesigned Sebring sedan will get a convertible version in the U.S. in the first half of 2007. Customers will be able to choose from three different types of tops - vinyl, cloth, or body-coloured steel retractable hardtop. All models get a power hard tonneau cover, and the top can be lowered by the touch of a button on the key fob.

In comparison to the sedan version, the Sebring convertible has a 2.9 inch longer wheelbase, is 3.5 inches taller, more than 2 inches wider and 3 inches taller, while having a 2.9 inch longer wheelbase. All of this allows for enough cargo room in the trunk to hold two golf bags when the roof is retracted. To improve visibility when the top is up, designers minimized the width of the C-pillar.

Chrysler said that it paid acute attention to detail when designing the Sebring convertible. In addition to being able to hold two golf bags with the top down, it can hold up to four golf bags with the top down. The convertible top latches completely automatically on its own, so passengers don't have to worry about fussing with latches themselves. Also making things easier for passengers are the seatbelts that are integrated into the front seat and rear seats, making it easier for people to get in and out of the vehicle. Other features include:

  • Available remote start
  • An available windscreen that reduces wind and road noise
  • A locking glove box that can secure important documents and small items for when the top is left down
  • Available stain-resistant, odor resistant, anti-static seat fabric
  • Rear cupholders that are positioned in the rear quarter panels for easy access by rear-seat passengers
  • Passenger seat back that includes a map pocket for storage

Three engines will be available in the Sebring convertible sold in the United States - a 2.4-litre four-cylinder, a 2.7-litre flexible fuel V6 and a 3.5-litre V6 with a six-speed transmission. The 2.4- and 2.7-litre engines come standard with a 4-speed automatic transmission.

Chrysler went out of its way to provide a rigid body and comfortable ride - something not easy to do in a convertible. According to Chrysler, its body that is 2.5 times stiffer in twist and 1.5 times stiffer in bending than the previous generation model.

There are plenty of things Chrysler added inside the Sebring to add to the overall comfort. Soft surfaces cover several touch points, including the instrument panel cover and door arm rests. The center floor console features dual storage bins and a sliding armrest that moves three inches to adjust to drivers of different sizes.

To help please the eye, interior accents include alloy silver and chrome on the, satin silver and chrome on the Touring model and satin silver, chrome and tortoise shell on the Limited model.

The convertible also has a ton of available high-tech features, including a 20 GB hard disc drive, a Gracenote database loaded onto the hard drive to provide song identification, voice memo recording system integrated into the back of the rearview mirror, a radio screen that can display movies, satellite radio and a hands-free communication system.

All Sebrings come standard with front and front side airbags, anti-lock brakes, high-strength safety cage and side guard door beams to help protect occupants in side impacts.
