LOS ANGELES — Having made substantial strides for fuel consumption and reduced carbon dioxide emissions with its gasoline and diesel engines, BMW throws down the gauntlet for sustained mobility with the Hydrogen 7 sedan.

The BMW Hydrogen 7 is based on the full-sized, premium 7 Series sedan, and is powered by a 260-hp V12 that can take the car from zero to 100 km/h in 9.5 seconds. Top speed is limited electronically to 230 km/h.

The BMW Hydrogen 7 features a dual-mode power unit and can switch quickly and conveniently from hydrogen to conventional premium gasoline at the push of a button.

Hydrogen technology dramatically reduces emissions generated by personal transport and, in particular, minimizes the emission of CO2. Running in hydrogen mode, the BMW Hydrogen 7 essentially emits nothing but water vapour.

In hydrogen mode, the car has a cruising range of about 200 km, with another 480 km in gasoline mode, giving it an overall range of over 650 km (similar to the conventional 7) and allowing it to be used much the same way as a typical car. It also makes it easy to drive between hydrogen fuel stops, until the hydrogen infrastructure is fully developed.

And as BMW claims, the BMW Hydrogen 7 proves that changing over to an alternative form of energy doesn't mean missing out on superior driving dynamics of a BMW or the comfort of a premium luxury sedan.
