If you're starting to find the Saturn lineup unrecognizable, don't worry, because you're probably not the only one.

The company will be adding yet another new model to its lineup late in 2007 when the Astra joins the ranks of the brand new Aura sedan, Sky roadster and Outlook SUV, as well as the redesigned VUE.

The Saturn Astra will basically be the same vehicle as the 2007.5 Opel Astra, which is sold in Europe. The North American Astra will be sold in Canada and the U.S. in 3-door and 5-door versions sourced out of GM's plant in Antwerp, Belgium.

"This is another example of how we can strengthen our individual brands through cross-continental cooperation within GM," says Carl-Peter Forster, General Motors Europe President. "The Astra has played a key role in Opel's brand rejuvenation and will be a strong addition to the revitalized Saturn lineup."

"In Europe, Astra's combination of style, performance, safety technology and fuel efficiency have made it a hit with owners and auto critics alike," said Jill Lajdziak, Saturn general manager. "Now, Saturn is bringing the newly restyled Astra to North America and marrying it with our celebrated customer experience."

The North American Astra will retain many European styling cues and driving dynamics according to GM. Insiders at GM say future Saturn vehicles will be basically rebadged Opels.

"Saturn and Opel are a natural fit. They share similar demographics and brand positioning in their respective markets," explains GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz. "Their collaboration means that each brand will have strong, broad product lineups, created as cost-effectively as possible – without having to share everything."

The 2008 Saturn Astra is underpinned by a taught, European-bred suspension that delivers a sharp, responsive driving experience. Power comes from a 140-hp 1.8-litre Ecotec 4-cylinder engine that GM says is both energetic and economical.

Enhanced with variable valve timing to optimize power output and fuel efficiency, the dual overhead cam engine is paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. A 4-speed automatic is available.

StabiliTrak electronic stability control system with traction control is standard on all 3-door Astras, and available on 5-door models. This system works in concert with the standard 4-wheel, antilock disc brakes to help the driver maintain control during adverse road conditions or during sudden emergency driving situations.

An electro-hydraulic, rack-and-pinion steering system is standard on all models. It provides the solid, linear feel of a hydraulic power steering system, but improves fuel efficiency by operating the power steering pump only when necessary.

Astra is infused with Saturn's signature styling cues, such as a bright grille bar with prominent Saturn logo. North American Astras are distinguished from their European relatives with unique front and rear fascias that conform to North American bumper standards.

Rear-end styling also features a bright trim bar, with large, wraparound taillamps and clear lenses. The center high-mounted stop lamp uses LED technology for fast and crisp illumination.

Interior details include a continuation of the exterior's centre hood crease on to the top of the instrument panel, as well as a V-shaped center stack motif that also complements the design language of the exterior.

Firm, well-supported seats and a thick, 3-spoke steering wheel (with rake and telescopic adjustments) convey the Astra's sporting character. The sporty Astra 3-door receives specific seats with more aggressive bolsters and lumbar support. Seats are available in standard cloth or optional leather, with heated seats also available.

The standard 6-speaker AM/FM/CD sound system can be upgraded with available 7-speaker system and multi-disc and MP3-capable radios.

Astra rides on a 2,614 mm wheelbase, which combines with a 2,033 mm body-width to provide a roomy cabin for various combinations of people and cargo. The 60/40-split folding rear seat folds flat by working a single, high-mounted lever.

Safety features include dual stage front airbags, side curtain airbags, front-seat side-impact airbags and active head restraints

Astra goes on sale in the fourth quarter of 2007.

"The Astra is a great fit for the Saturn showroom, with European style and driving dynamics," concludes Saturn's Lajdziak. "It also signals our efforts to get new vehicles to market quickly and reinvent the entire Saturn product lineup with unprecedented speed."
