The five-seat Chevrolet Equinox attempts to stay on equal footing with sporty new competitors with the introduction of the 2008 Equinox Sport.

The new SUV is based entirely on the regular Equinox, but it's given a new 263-horsepower engine, 18-inch wheels, a lowered suspension and 6-speed automatic transmission with manual mode.

The roof rack has been removed for the Sport version but is still available as an option. It also comes in front-wheel or all-wheel drive.

Inside, the Equinox Sport uses standard all-ebony trim and features new seats that have improved bolstering which helps support the driver and passengers during spirited driving. It gets a leather-wrapped four spoke steering wheel and special shifter that allows for more precise control of the six-speed transmission's fully automatic or manual tap-up/tap-down controls.

Standard equipment and features include a split-folding rear seat, flat-folding front passenger seat, power door locks with remote keyless entry, power windows, air conditioning, tilt steering, rear liftgate with defogger and washer/wiper, and an AM/FM/CD/MP3 stereo with six-speaker audio system. XM Satellite Radio and remote vehicle starting also are standard. Available options include a power sunroof and seven-speaker audio system.

The 3.6-litre V6 found in the Equinox Sport has 250 lbs.-ft. of torque, which is a 42 per cent increase over the Equinox LT. The vehicle has a 0-60 mph time of less than seven seconds. To go along with this newfound power, the vehicle gets the aforementioned performance-tuned suspension, a ride height that has been lowered by about one inch, and larger, solid stabilizer bars.

Safety features include GM's StabiliTrak electronic stability control system, front and rear disc brakes with four-channel ABS and a tire pressure monitoring system.
