It's still about a year away, but Pontiac just couldn't wait to show off its powerful new performance sedan.

A show version of the new G8 will be on display at the 2007 Chicago Auto Show and despite its flashy appearance featuring hood scoops, performance tires, chrome exhaust tips and spoiler, this isn't just a concept car that will never see the light of day. In reality, it's pretty darn close to the finished version.

The new G8 will be a front engine, rear-wheel drive sedan that will have two trim levels, each featuring its own engine - the base will have a 3.6-litre V6 that produces 261-horsepower, while the GT will have a 6.0-litre V8 that produces 362-horsepower (torque for each engine is 250 lbs.-ft. and 391 lbs.-ft., respectively). The V6 will be mated to a standard 5-speed automatic with manual shift mode, while the V8 will have a six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode as standard. A six-speed manual transmission will be available as an option. Redline for both versions will be 6,900 rpm.

In addition, like many V8-powered GM vehicles released in recent months, the G8 GT will have an Active Fuel Management system, which enhances fuel economy by alternating between eight- and four-cylinder power depending on what's needed at any given time.

Visually, the G8 will very much show off its performance inspiration thanks in no small part to fenders that flare over wheels that are pushed to the car's corners, a dual-port grille, projector-beam headlamps housed in crystal clear lenses, red taillamp lenses and 18" wheels (19" are optional with a sport package).

The G8 doesn't just look the part. It has a fully adjustable four-wheel independent suspension system that employs a MacPherson strut design in the front and a four-link coil-over-shock design in the rear. The suspension is tuned specifically for each version, though GM says that both will feature increased lateral stiffness for enhanced handling. A limited slip differential will come standard on GT models.

Inside the G8, drivers will find what Pontiac calls a 'driver-oriented' instrument cluster which sits in the driver's direct line of sight. In addition, an electronic driver information center is located between the large, round tachometer and speedometer. Special attention to detail includes jewel-like instruments, use of satin and chrome trim and rich-feeling, grained textures throughout. The instrument cluster glows with white light on the primary instruments while the rest of the instrument panel uses Pontiac's signature red lighting.

GM says that the seats were made to hold occupants in place during aggressive driving while still providing comfort during extended trips. Cloth seating is standard and a cloth/leather two-tone combination is optional. The cloth/leather combo pairs black with either red or blue inserts and color-matched instrument faces on certain exterior color combinations.

The car found at the Chicago show will have some features that won't be part of the final production version. These include:

  • Twenty-inch 'shadow chrome' wheels and performance tires
  • Ride height lowered approximately half-inch
  • High-performance brake rotors with painted brake calipers
  • Custom interior trim color, including a leather-wrapped dash
  • Exclusive exterior paint color: Phantom Grey
  • Concept of “modernized” Pontiac badge, to gauge public opinion
