The new Volvo V70 is still very much a wagon and is still going to be a great people mover according to the company. Interesting, then, that they expect half of its buyers won't even be families with children.

Regardless, this doesn't mean it won't be safe for whoever will be riding inside it.

There are a few firsts in the new V70. It will have built-in child booster seats and will for the first time offer a six cylinder engine - in this case a 3.2-litre inline-6 that produces 235-horsepower.

The V70 is meant to be more user-friendly this year, as the rear seats fold 40/20/40 and the backrests also incorporate a simple folding mechanism. An optional rear power liftgate, sliding load floor and a storage compartment under the luggage area are also examples of how the new V70 improves passengers' ease-of-use according to Volvo. Plus, the rear seat area is larger, allowing for more room for the passengers in the back.

The front of the V70 incorporates an egg-crate grille with chrome in the vertical bars. The rear has a new feature that helps change the look and improve safety. The fixed-position lights on the body sides double as supplementary brake lights if the cargo is so large that the driver has to drive with the tailgate secured partly open.

Several other safety features of course are highlighted on the V70, everything ranging from brake assist, which applies additional pressure automatically if the driver doesn't brake hard enough when a collision is imminent, to low- and high-speed deformation zones. There are also seat belt reminders for all five seats, a collapsing steering column, Blind Spot Information System, adaptive cruise control and the same two-stage side airbags seen in the S80.
