While some SUVs are moving to look more soft and less-rugged, Mazda went the opposite way with its completely redesigned Tribute.

The new version is more rugged looking and provides an alternative to the sportier CX-7 and CX-9 SUVs that were just released by Mazda. Despite a more rugged appearance, the Tribute is still more of a car-based crossover with its unibody design and fully-independent coil spring suspension.

New for 2008 is a redesigned front and rear fascia, hood, liftgate, power side-view mirrors, 16-inch alloy wheels, headlamps and taillamps. Fog lights come standard and the beltline has been raised. Standard safety features across the Tribute lineup now include dual front side air bags and side air curtains, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), Roll Over Stability Control (RSC) and Traction Control System (TCS). Inside, customers will be able to choose from new colour combinations.

The standard engine found in the Tribute is a 2.3-litre inline-4 cylinder that produces 153-horsepower at 5,800 rpm and 152 lb-ft of torque at 4,250 rpm. This is mated to a standard 5-speed manual transmission, though anyone who opts for the 4-speed automatic transmission will get cruise control as standard.

The 3-0-litre V6 makes 200 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 193 lb-ft of torque at 4,850 rpm. The V6 has aluminum heads and block, for reduced weight and better structural rigidity, to reduce vibration and improve refinement. A 4-speed automatic transmission comes standard with this engine.

Mazda says the Tribute rides like a sedan thanks to characteristics and features such as a low center of gravity, fully-independent suspension, a wide track both front and rear and gas-charged shock absorbers. In addition, Electric Power Steering (EPS), which is new (and standard) for the Tribute in 2008, improves vehicle sensitivity, NVH and fuel economy by eliminating the power steering pump.

It still has other typical SUV traits such as a high driving position for better visibility, a tall roof and good ground clearance. It seats five and there's several storage spaces within reach of the driver, front passenger and rear seat occupants, from storage bins to smaller compartments to storage areas on the backs of each front seat.

The new Tribute features a 'Triple-H' construction which crumples in the event of a collision and redirects energy away from the driver. Side impact door beams are also fitted further to improve safety in a side impact. The Tribute comes with standard with advanced front airbags, front side impact airbags - fitted into the seats rather than the doors – and side-impact air curtains for extra safety in the event of a rollover.
