Toyota just recently gave its award-winning Camry mid-size sedan a significant facelift, and is now doing the same with its Highlander mid-size SUV, which just happens to share some of the same components as the Camry. Toyota can only hope the SUV receives the same accolades that its flagship sedan has.

The 2008 Highlander rides on the same chassis derived from the Camry and Avalon sedans. The SUV gets an increase in almost all dimensions for 2008, as it's 4-inches longer, 3-inches wider and has a 3-inch longer wheelbase and gets a 1-inch increase in ground clearance. This increase in dimensions carries over to the inside of the Highlander, which has some interesting and unique features to help make things more comfortable for passengers.

For instance, the second row captains chairs have armrests that, if needed, can be converted to a bench seat for three passengers. A 'centre stow' seat, when not in use, is hidden in a compartment under the front centre console. In its place, passengers can easily snap in the provided centre stow centre console or choose to leave the area open as a walk-through to the third row. The second row also slides forward and back 119.4 mm (4.7 inches) and reclines.

The Highlander will have seven standard airbags, including a driver's knee airbag and roll-sensing side curtain airbags for all three rows. It will also get several other standard safety features that all Toyota SUVs have received for the last three years, including: anti-lock brakes, traction control, electronic brake-force distribution, brake assist, and for the first time, enhanced vehicle stability control with electronic power steering. On all models except the base models, it will provide a backup camera with a multi-information screen. The 2008 Highlander will be the first Toyota division vehicle to feature both active head restraints and a new hood and fender system designed to crumple on impact with a pedestrian.

Toyota says that the styling of the exterior is based more on 'strength and intelligence' and less on 'ruggedness and toughness.' It features muscular contours, crips lines and a stable stance according to the company. In addition, the inside is quieter and features more ride comfort.

All Highlander models (except the hybrid version) will use a 3.5-litre V6 that produces 270-horsepower - a 55-horsepower gain over last generation's 3.3-litre engine - and 249 lbs.-ft. of torque. It's mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission and comes in either 2WD or 4WD versions.
