The focus on Ford's new-look small car is to be more modern, more dynamic and a lot more exciting.

Whereas now we have Focus wagons, coupes, sedans, in 2008 the Focus will come only in sedan and a new coupe bodystyle. It has been completely redesigned to look more modern and sporty to help it appeal to the younger car buying segment.

Designers of the new Focus drew inspiration from the Fusion mid-size sedan when designing Ford's small car. Though the front doesn't include Ford's new three-bar grille, the grille itself does have a chrome bar. The beltline was raised and the designers had surface areas break sharply in places to create a sense of movement and unpredictability.

"Having surface areas break sharply in places gives the car a sense of forward motion," says Lon Zaback, Focus chief designer. "A lot of cars today use forms and lines that are parallel and predictable. If you look at Focus, you will see one sweep going through the hood and headlamps, and a different sweep going through the fascia. This creates movement, tension and drama."

The vehicle shares traits with other Ford vehicles as well, including the Escape and its tail lamps, the configurable 'My Color' instrument display on the Mustang and the white LED instruments on the 2003 Lincoln Navigator.

The cabin of the 2008 Focus also manages to become more contemporary with additions like a top-of-dash display, a matte silver-metallic finish on the dashboard and centre console (SEL models), as well as optional equipment such as leather seats with contrast stitching and ambient interior lighting. Ford got rid of the traditional 'brick' design for the centre stack, allowing designers freedom to draw a sharp accent line across the top of the dashboard.

More space has been added as well with a larger centre console and bigger cupholders. In addition, models equipped with Sport or Deluxe packages come with white-face instrument cluster gauges and chrome accents on the door handles, climate control vents and shifter.

Noise levels have been reduced for the 2008 model thanks to things like a new acoustic windshield and thicker side glass in the front doors. Much more work was done inside a wind tunnel, as well, to help reduce noise.

"We spent many hours in the wind tunnel developing the shapes of exterior parts like mirrors and front openings, spoilers, and the shape of the air deflectors under the car. There was a lot of work done to improve aerodynamics and reduce noise inside the car," said Focus chief engineer Marcio Alfonso.

Two other brand new features for the Ford family are the additions of customizable ambient lighting and instruments and switches that are coloured in an ice-blue colour. Customers can choose from seven different ambient lighting colours which light the Focus' cupholders and footwells. The Focus will also come available with its new Sync technology, which allows drivers to synchronize their cell phones and mp3 players to their Focus.

The 2008 Focus is 60 pounds lighter than last year's version and features increased stiffness for sharper steering and handling while increasing ride quality. The spring rates, shock absorbers, stabilizer bars, and jounce bumpers have all been re-tuned for 2008 and the Focus uses an independent front suspension with MacPherson struts and an independent multilink design in back.

The new Focus gets a 2.0-litre inline four-cylinder engine delivering an estimated 136-horsepower. A super-clean Duratec 20E engine is offered in states adopting California emission standards that qualifies Focus as a Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (PZEV). Both of these engines can be mated to a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic transmission.

Standard safety features in the 2008 Focus include six airbags, energy-absorbing safety belts and load limiting retractors and pretensioners. Anti-lock brakes are available as an option.
