BMW has updated its 1 Series, and the rumour mill has it coming to Canada for the 2008 model year.

The rear-wheel-drive sub-compact has been available in Europe since 2003 in 5-door hatchback bodystyles, but Canada's automotive climate makes it a desirable entry-level point to the Canadian BMW lineup of sedans and wagons. However, we may not get the hatchback that is being refreshed for 2007 (and a 3-door version).

Canadian Auto World reports in its March 2007 issue that the US is planning a coupe and convertible 1 Series but no hatchbacks, and speculates Canada will follow suit. BMW would not comment.

As with most sub-compacts, the 1 Series combines fascinating driving fun with improved efficiency and exemplary emissions. Under the hood there are newly developed 4-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines, though Canadian 1 Series would likely make do with only a gasoline engine.

This new 4-cylinder gasoline engine features BMW's second-generation direct injection to put out 168 horsepower and a maximum torque of 155 lbs.ft, and take the vehicle from zero to 100 km/h in 7.7 seconds. The average fuel consumption is 6.4 liters/100 km (on the European cycle).

Several energy saving features are also incorporated:

  • Regenerative braking: energy generation for the vehicle electrical system happens during coasting and braking.
  • Engine stop/start function turns off the engine in stop-and-go traffic.
  • Shift point control lets drivers know whether they could drive more economically by shifting into a higher gear (effectively lowering engine speed).
