After a 13-year hiatus from producing coupes, Audi is back with the new A5 and S5, two four-seater coupes that blend luxury and performance. With these additions, Audi is finally offering a fairly complete range of models.

At first glance, you wouldn't think it was an Audi. The lines are a radical departure from what we're used to seeing from this manufacturer and, according to Audi designer Stefan Sielaff, the company's future products will be based on this evolution in design.

The lines of the Audi A5 were inspired from the Nuvolari Quattro, a concept vehicle launched in 2003. When it comes to coupes, lines are what sell, and the new fluid and elegant look of the A5 and the sportier S5 is just what buyers are looking for. Despite the fact that it is positioned between the A4 and the A6, it can practically rival the Mercedes-Benz CLS or the BMW 6 Series thanks to its enhanced dimensions and unique style. Although the company has yet to announce how much this vehicle will cost, you can expect the base price to be between $50,000 and $60,000, which is slightly more than the BMW 3 Series coupe.

On the outside, you'll immediately notice the attention to detail, especially the sportier rims. Until now, Audi had stuck to more classic wheels. Several elements have been added to give the S5 a sportier look, including a bigger spoiler and a double chrome exhaust pipe.

In Canada, the A5 is available with just one kind of engine, a 3.2-litre 6-cylinder FSI that produces 265 hp. Moreover, the initial A5s will come equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission, though automatic versions will be offered later. The Audi S5 comes with a 4.2-litre V6 FSI that produces no less than 350 hp, which allows the vehicle to go from 0-100 in about 5 seconds. European versions come with diesel engines. Both models come with quattro all-wheel drive.

The series is offered with 17-inch alloy rims, automatic air conditioning, an MMI operating system and a superior audio system.

Introduced at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show, the Audi A5 and S5 will be available in Canada by November 2007. You can bet that a cabriolet will be offered soon after that, like several other derivatives. Audi will likely use this new platform in its coming A4.
