This is no SUV. It's a luxury utility vehicle and Lexus is surely hoping customers will LUV it enough to buy it in droves.

The luxury division of Toyota has unveiled its new LX utility vehicle and to no one's surprise, it has grown and become much more powerful, which is obvious enough by its new name - the LX570.

For those who just have to do some offroading with a luxury truck, the LX570 will have an increase of 110-horsepower over last years model for a total of 381-horsepower. It also produces 400 lbs.-ft. of torque and has an increased towing capacity over last year, from 6,500 lbs. in 2007 to 8,500 lbs for 2008.

The engine is mated to a 6-speed sequential-shift automatic transmission and the vehicle features new suspension and four-wheel drive systems. The suspension system incorporates both active height control and adaptive variable suspension, coupled with a new cross-linked system which has each wheel react to the different surface it's driving on. The system senses what each wheel is doing and counters that with appropriate response at the opposite wheels.

The height setting can work automatically, lowering the chassis by an average of two inches for entry and exit and returning to its normal height once the vehicle has started accelerating. When driving on the highway, the front gets lowered about one inch and the back by about a half an inch for improved aerodynamics. And on those ocassions when ride height is needed - such as driving over rough, uneven and rocky terrain - the chassis will be raised by about three inches.

The LX570 now has what's known as a Crawl Control feature. Just as many vehicles have cruise control to keep speed at a constant pace on the highway, Crawl Control keeps the LX570 going at a constant low speed over rough terrain so the driver can focus on steering. In addition, Crawl Control actuates a set of virtual locking differentials to minimize tire slippage and maximize chassis behavior. Because chassis control is significantly improved, the likelihood of bottoming the LX 570 on the driving surface is significantly reduced.

For added safety, the vehicle uses a a new blind corner monitor feature that is designed for use in places such as parking garages. Cameras are located within the grille and under the passenger side-view mirror. The driver can then check hard-to-view areas by simply pressing a button on the dashboard and viewing the camera images on the navigation screen.

In addition to this, the LX470 comes standard with 10 air bags, active front headrests, second-row seat belt pretensioners and a direct tire pressure monitor system.

Though the LX570's wheelbase is the same as its predecessor, the interior length has increased by at least four inches and width has gone up nearly an inch for improved space for passengers. This utility vehicle also carries such luxury amenities as four-zone independent climate control, a power-sliding second-row seat with a 40/20/40 split, a power third-row seat, navigation with Bluetooth capability, a nine-speaker premium audio system, XM Satellite Radio with XM NavTraffic (a real time traffic information service that provides driver alerts regarding accidents, road closings and traffic), front seat power bottom cushion extenders and 20-inch, 6-spoke alloy wheels.

Optional equipment will include climate controlled front seats and heated rear seats, a 19-speaker Mark Levinson audio system with a hard disc drive capable of storing up to 2,000 songs, a rear seat entertainment system with a nine-inch screen, the Lexus Intuitive Park Assist, a Pre-Collision System with Adaptive Cruise Control and Lexus Link.

The LX570 exterior uses the design theme that Lexus has been using on all of its redesigned vehicles - L-finesse. The new LX looks bolder from the outside thanks to large projector headlights that are restyled to add sophistication to the beefy front end, according to Lexus. The combination lights and license plate are accentuated with chrome accents, and the wide front grille and sculpted wheel arches add a look of ruggedness.
