For its fourth model, Scion is sticking to what it knows best - the younger generation.

Toyota's youth-oriented brand is expanding its range for the 2008 model year with the xD, an urban subcompact vehicle that has agile handling and extra utility matched only by its expressive styling.

The xD has all the hallmarks of the other three Scion models - futuristic styling, a powerful audio system, lots of technology and the ability to be modified to each user's tastes.

The xD's exterior features a thick, muscular body, accentuated wheel flares, a long and narrow back window, horizontal headlamps (like all Scions), and turn signals built into the side mirrors.

Customers will have plenty of choice on the xD, with three wheel covers available, two different sound systems, and six exterior paint colours.

The standard 160-watt, six-speaker audio system features iPod connectivity, with a jack located below the HVAC controls. Once plugged in, the vehicle takes the track, artist and album information from the iPod and displays it onto an LCD screen located on the centre stack. Since many Scion customers add in-car entertainment systems to their vehicle, the xD will come standard with rear head unit outputs allowing for the addition of external amps to boost power to the front and rear speakers, and subwoofers. All head unit features remain unchanged if this feature is used.

An optional premium sound system is available, which adds the ability to download 'skins' to play on the LCD faceplate. Customers can download images and short movie clips from Pioneer's website or use software to burn their own images onto a CD to use on the faceplate. The audio system is also satellite radio-ready and has a user-customizable welcome screen.

The xD is powered by a 1.8-litre 4-cylinder engine that uses variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i) for improved fuel economy. The engine produces 128-horsepower and can be mated to either a 5-speed manual transmission or 4-speed automatic.

There is plenty of storage room in the xD, including a storage tray under the steering wheel, a small box in the front of the center console for holding MP3 players or cell phones, an upper and lower glove box, as well as a driver's side change box. A hidden storage space is located below the rear cargo area.

Standard features on the xD include power windows, locks and mirrors, remote keyless entry, air conditioning, four wheel ABS brakes, tire pressure monitoring system, steering wheel audio controls and six air bags.
