The horsepower numbers in Infiniti's G sedan and coupe have been slowly rising over the years, but it takes a big jump for the 2008 model, where its name changes from the G35 to the G37, and pumps out 330-horsepower.

Interestingly enough, Infiniti expects the new G to provide better fuel economy.

Available (at least at the moment) only in coupe form, the G37 also gets a redesigned exterior and available advanced 4-Wheel Active Steer system.

This is a brand new engine (known as VQ37VHR) for Infiniti. It's a 3.7-litre V6 with VVEL (Variable Valve Event and Lift) with 270 lbs.-ft. of torque to go along with the horsepower, and it has a 7,500 rpm redline.

The VVEL system combines hydraulic-controlled variable valve timing and electronically controlled variable valve lift on the intake side to help improve performance and response. Infiniti says that the VVEL system is also expected to improve emissions and fuel efficiency.

The new specially tuned dual exhaust system has equal length exhaust manifolds and performance enthusiasts will be happy to hear the new authentic performance notes.

The engine is mated to either a 5-speed automatic transmission with manual mode and available paddle shifters, or a lightweight 6-speed manual transmission.

Few people would claim that the previous generation G coupe wasn't sporty, but the G37 (which was even tested on the famed Nurburgring circuit) gets even more performance upgrades in terms of suspension and platform. The front midship platform has been tightened 36% from the previous generation and it has a lower overall height and a wider front and rear track width.

The G37 Coupe's 4-wheel independent suspension design features lightweight aluminum components and large front and rear stabilizer bars, increased spring rates and optimized suspension damping.

The new G uses 4-wheel vented disc brakes and an anti-lock braking system. All G37s come standard with Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC).

Like all Infinitis, the G37 makes use of many technological features to make the driver's life easier. It comes available with intelligent cruise control which slows the car and speeds it up depending on where vehicles in front are in relation to the G37, a brake assist system which senses emergency braking situations and applies added pressure when needed, an available integrated rearview monitor camera, and a navigation system with touch screen capabilities.

From an aesthetic standpoint, the G37 exterior features a wave-style hood, front fascia with Infiniti's signature double-arch grille and L-shaped High-Intensity Discharge (HID) bi-xenon headlights with integrated fog lamps. It comes with standard 18-inch, 5-spoke wheels or optional 19-inch, 10-spoke wheels. The rear has underbody air diffusers and large dual exhaust outlets with chrome finishers. A rear spoiler is also available.

The interior includes features such as an 8-way power driver and 4-way front passenger seats (8-way on certain model packages), front seats that move forward at the touch of a button for easier access to the rear seats, button-operated remote start system.

An Infiniti isn't an Infiniti unless it comes available with a loud sound system and the G37 fits the bill and then some. It comes standard with a 6-speaker AM/FM/CD audio system with MP3 playback capability and center console-mounted auxiliary input, as well as a 7-inch color display. Customers have the option, though, of an 11-speaker Bose 'Studio on Wheels' which uses 10-inch subwoofers.

Safety features include an available adaptive headlight system, six standard air bags, front seat active head restraints and seat belt pretensioners.

The 2008 G37 will come in three trim levels - Coupe, Coupe Journey and Coupe Sport 6MT. Several option packages will also be available, including a sport package which includes 19-inch wheels and tires, Viscous Limited-Slip Differential, sport-tuned suspension, sport brakes, unique front fascia and side sills, sport-styled seats and steering wheel stitching and aluminum pedals and paddle shifters.
