What is the preeminent American sports car? It's a question that may never be answered for certain, but if one thing is for sure, the iconic Chevrolet Corvette makes a strong case for itself year in and year out.

The 2008 model year is no exception thanks to a coupe and convertible that is more powerful than last year's version, and a Z06 that is just as powerful as the previous version.

The '08 Corvette has a new 6.2-litre engine that can come with an optional two-mode exhaust system that raises the horsepower from 430 to 436, and torque from 424 lbs.-ft. to 428 lbs.-ft.

The engine can be mated to either a six speed manual or six speed automatic transmission, the latter of which includes steering wheel paddle shifters. The paddle shifter-equipped version is the fastest production automatic Corvette ever, with a 0-60 mph time of 4.3 seconds.

The two-mode exhaust system uses vacuum-actuated outlet valves, which control engine noise during low-load operation, but open for maximum performance during high-load operation. It is similar - though not identical to - the Z06 system, which uses a 3.0-inch-diameter exhaust. The coupe/convertible uses a 2.5-inch-diameter exhaust.

The Corvette gets a new rack-and-pinion steering system that Chevrolet says will improve steering feel at all speeds.

The 2008 Corvette comes standard with 18" front wheels and 19" back wheels, all of which feature a new split-spoke design which was introduced on the limited-edition '07 Indianapolis 500 Pace Car replicas.

The interior features a standard AM/FM/XM player with CD player, and customers can opt for a Bose audio system which includes a 6-disc CD changer and steering wheel-mounted audio controls.

A custom leather-wrapped interior package is available on all models which features several details such as:

  • Two-tone, leather-wrapped upper and lower instrument panel, door pads and seats
  • New, exclusive colors: Linen or Sienna, with unique color breakup
  • Padded door panel armrests
  • "Corvette" embroidered on passenger-side dash pad
  • Embroidered crossed flags logo on headrests
  • Interior enhancements – All models feature a new wrapped instrument panel center trim plate, with bright surrounds for the shifter and cupholder. There are also new metal-finish door sill plates that greet passengers as they step into the vehicle, as well as a new lighted control knob for the available Magnetic Selective Ride Control.

The front of the vehicle's exterior features fixed Xenon HID headlamps and the Corvette has a 0.286 coefficient of drag; the coupe is the most aerodynamic Corvette ever.

There are two versions of the convertible - a standard manual soft top or an optional automatic top, both of which feature a a five-layer fabric that Chevrolet says helps reduce wind noise.

Many of the actual guts of the car have been redesigned, including the suspension cradles, control arms, knuckles, springs, dampers, bushings, stabilizer bars and steering gear for what Chevrolet says is improved driving dynamics. In addition, drivers can choose from one of three suspension settings to suit their style.

And when the driving becomes a little too crazy, the Corvette uses a combination of anti-lock braking, traction control and Active Handling to help keep the car on the road. Nonetheless, Chevrolet says that the overall dynamic chassis control systems are less intrusive than in last year's model.

Some features that were optional on last year's model but come standard on this year's include:

  • OnStar with available Turn-By-Turn Navigation
  • XM Satellite Radio
  • Auto-dimming rearview mirrors (with compass)
  • Audio input jack on all radio systems except navigation; Personal Audio Link is available as a dealer-installed item with the navigation system.
  • The '08 Corvettes also come with a new Keyless Access fob, which features the key and remote-function controls integrated in a single unit.

The Z06 version is still the fastest and most powerful production Corvette ever, thanks to its 7.0-litre LS7 engine which delivers 505 horsepower. Match this with a curb weight of only 3,132 lbs. (1,421 kg), and you have yourself a car that goes from 0-60 in a mere 3.7 seconds - in first gear. It has a top speed of 198 mph (as recorded on Germany's Autobahn) and has circuited Germany 's famed Nürburgring in a time of 7:43.

It makes use of an aluminum body structure for optimal stiffness and to keep its curb weight lower. In addition, carbon fibre structural composites are bonded to the structure, such as the front wheelhouses and the passenger compartment floors (which also use a lightweight balsa wood core).

To further set it apart from the standard Corvette, the Z06 uses all-new wheels, tires, brakes, as well as its own rear spring and roll stabilizer and the six-speed transmission that the engine is mated to has a limited slip differential.

To help the front-to-rear weight distribution - important for any sports car - the designers used a light-but-strong magnesium cradle (which serves as the attachment point for the engine and some front suspension components) and moved the battery from underhood to a position in the rear cargo area, behind one of the rear wheels.

You would think a coupe that has a description like this would be anything but driveable during daily commutes to work but Chevrolet begs to differ. The company says that the 2008 Corvette is still perfectly driveable in day-to-day commutes thanks to High-Intensity Discharge lighting, fog lamps, leather seating, dual-zone air conditioning, cabin air filtration and head-up display (HUD) with track mode and g-meter (all standard).

Some options that customers will find available on the Z06 include polished, gray or chrome wheels, a telescoping steering wheel, heated seats, side-impact air bags, a navigation system with GPS and universal home remote.
