Porsche has announced the magic words as the weather warms in Canada - 'Turbo' and 'cabriolet.'

Initials details have surfaced for the new 2008 Porsche 911 Turbo cabriolet, which will start at $189,600 CDN and will be available in North America in September 2007.

The Turbo cabriolet houses the same 3.6-litre, six-cylinder twin-turbocharged engine that can be found in the Turbo coupe. It produces 480-horsepower and 460 lbs.-ft. of torque at only 1,950 rpm.

An optional Sport Chrono Package Turbo allows a 10-second, mid-rpm-range overboost, temporarily increasing turbo boost under full throttle and increasing peak torque to 505 lb-ft. The manual version can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.0 seconds, while the Tiptronic S version covers the same distance in 3.8 seconds. Both versions have a top test-track speed of 310 km/h.

The convertible uses Variable Turbine Geometry technology which incorporates the turbocharger's adjustable guide blades, which can vary in angle to most effectively guide engine exhaust flow onto the turbocharger's impeller wheel. This allows the system to provide the advantages of both a small and large turbocharger, eliminating turbo lag and instead offering improved acceleration, especially at low engine speeds.

The convertible uses a soft top to help keep the weight down (it weighs only 154 pounds more than the coupe version), and the top - which opens or closes in roughly 20 seconds - can be operated at speeds of up to 48 km/h.

Standard on the 911 Turbo cabriolet is Porsche Active Suspension Management. Passive safety features include six airbags (standard) and rollover protection system – which has steel tubing integrated into the windshield frame and automatically extending safety bars behind the rear seats.

Other standard features include bi-xenon headlights, 19-inch two-tone forged wheels, a wind deflector, the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system with DVD-based navigation and a 5.8-inch color monitor, and Bose Surround Sound System.
