We've had to wait a little while longer than those in Europe, but the BMW 1-Series 2 + 2 coupe is ready to launch in Canada in the first half of 2008.

The 1-Series coupe - like most BMWs - will be a front-engine, rear-wheel drive vehicle, meaning better front-to-rear weight distribution. Both the 128i and 135i variants will come standard with a 6-speed automatic transmission, while a 6-speed automatic transmission with Steptronic is available as an option.

Though BMW's Dynamic Stability Control - which also includes Dynamic Traction Control - comes standard and adds an extra level of safety in challenging conditions such as the snow, both can be turned off if the driver wants to experience more spirited driving.

The naturally-aspirated 3.0-litre engine delivers 230-horsepower and 200 lb.-ft. of torque, while the twin-turbocharged version will pump out 300 horsepower and an incredible 300 lb-ft of torque - from as low as 1,400 rpm. In European specification, the 135i coupe accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 5.3 seconds.

Visually, the 1-Series coupe will feature a spoiler integrated into the trunk lid and 17" wheels, while 18's will be available as an option. The 135i will also have an available 'M' Aerodynamics package, which uses a high-performance brake system incorporating six-piston fixed front calipers combined with two-piston fixed calipers on the rear along with enhanced brake cooling and a sports suspension. It will also use special performance tires.

Though this will be priced lower than the 3-Series, it will still have plenty of standard and optional luxury appointments, including navigation system, two types of leather interiors, sports seats, Bluetooth technology and a USB port for direct control of an iPod or other MP3 player. All 1-Series coupes come with a 60/40 split rear seat, six air bags and an auxiliary input jack.

Other safety features include driver's pedals that move back automatically with a predetermined amount of deformation in the event of a frontal collision (reducing the risk of driver foot injuries), three-point seat belts and crash-optimized seats with specially padded headrests and backrests.
