Oval gets over the blues
The invitation to attend a Ford Forum in Dearborn, Mich., was nothing out of the ordinary. But the event itself had all the makings of being something a little unusual. Ford Motor Company is expecting big things in 2008 and I was especially curious to see new Taurus and Taurus X models. A day at the track is always fun and it provides the ideal setting to try several vehicles on similar road surfaces back-to-back. Here are just some of the highlights we experienced.
2008 Ford Taurus
I have to admit my initial reaction to the idea of bringing back the Taurus nameplate was one of silent contemplation. For some reason the outgoing Ford Five Hundred never seemed to resonate with consumers and because of this I understand the need to rebadge was critical, but Taurus?
Personally, I quite liked the interior and drive experience of the previous Ford Five Hundred. Sure it was a little bland, but it offered a uniquely American counterpoint to competitors in the market such as the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord.
The 2008 Ford Taurus showcases in excess of 500 improvements over the outgoing model. All are designed to enhance the driver/passenger experience with highlights that include a new exterior design, greater horsepower, improved all-wheel-drive performance and standard electronic stability control.
Power comes in the form of a 3.5-litre Duratec V6 engine that delivers 260 hp (a 30% increase) and 245 lb.-ft of torque. Mated to a smooth-shifting six-speed transmission, it sails away from a stop and easily reaches highway speeds without ever breaking a sweat. Listening to this refined sedan accelerate past as I stood next to the track, I was impressed with its powerful exhaust note and overall stance on the road.
Pricing starts at $30,899 for an SEL front-wheel-drive model up to $39,199 for a Limited all-wheel-drive. Ford family pricing is available for model year 2008.
2008 Ford Taurus X
In the minds of Ford marketing executives, if the name Taurus is good enough for a significantly redesigned sedan, than utilizing it twice for the redo of the Ford Freestyle must also be a good idea. Time will tell, but there should be no question as to the seriousness of the 2008 Ford Taurus X.
Providing a solid one-two punch with the Ford Edge in the hotly contested crossover segment, the Taurus X takes the more traditional approach to exterior style and interior design. Both feature Ford's new signature three-bar chrome grille and step-up headlamps, but the Taurus X is larger offering three rows of seating for six or seven-passenger configurations.
Getting in and out of the third row is a snap with the new flip-and-fold second-row seating. Significant interior improvements have been made to both the dash and centre console, providing a rich feel and enhanced useability. Visibility is excellent while fit and finish seem to be on par with high-end competitors in the market.
Engine performance is also much improved for 2008. Similar to the aforementioned Ford Taurus, the new 3.5-litre V6 engine delivers a 44% increase in acceleration from the outgoing Ford Freestyle. Fuel economy is expected to be on par with last year's model due in part to a new fuel-saving electric power steering system.
AdvanceTrac electronic stability control and intelligent all-wheel drive are standard for 2008, as are ABS brakes. Additional safety features include seat-deployed side airbags and Ford's Safety Canopy side curtain airbags for all three rows. Access to the rear cargo area is made easier with an available power rear liftgate.
The Ford Taurus X starts at $33,999 for an SEL front-wheel-drive and tops out at $41,999 for the Limited all-wheel-drive. Ford family pricing is also available on this model range.
2008 Ford Focus
Though popular in Canada for many years, small cars are experiencing significant growth in North America and the 2008 Ford Focus seems poised to capitalize as it enters the market later this fall.
For the first time ever, Ford will offer the Focus in a two-door coupe, joining the four-door sedan with two configurations: SE and SES. A third model designated S will make its debut several months after the initial launch.
Outside the new Ford Focus showcases a brawny stance, high beltline and crisp character lines running front to back. Unique headlights feature horizontal bars with a matte finish, all of which is designed to flow seamlessly into the signature Ford chrome-bar grille.
Inside, the 2008 Ford Focus improves the overall occupant experience with a quieter interior, flexible storage and standard Ice Blue ambient lighting. For a little extra, tiny LED lights can be added to the front/rear cupholders and footwells in seven different colour choices.
Under the hood resides a powerful 2.0-litre Duratec DOHC four-cylinder engine. A new air intake, cooling and exhaust system improves performance to an estimated 136 hp. The Ford Focus can be matched to either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission.
Small car safety is much improved with thorax side air bags and side air curtains in the event of a side impact. Antilock brakes are standard on SEL and optional SE models. Ford has yet to announce prices for the 2008 Focus.
Ford Sync
Microsoft and Ford have joined forces to provide improvements as to how we use cell phones and portable music devices in a vehicle. Bluetooth technology is the basis for this user-friendly system as up to six cell phones can wirelessly connect to the vehicle. Voice commands prompt dialing of automatically stored phone books and it even has the capability to read back text messages for a complete hands-free experience. Aimed at making technology safer, the potential for convenience looks excellent.
Summary With its strongest new vehicle lineup ever, the 2008 Ford models seem on the verge of gaining new ground in the marketplace. Hoping to grow their car business, dominate the SUV and CUV market while maintaining a lead in truck sales, the rest is up to the buying public. With monthly sales increases already in place for Ford Fusion, Escape and Escape Hybrid, the future looks bright at the big blue oval once again.
