Cadillac looked to one of its slick-looking concepts when designing the new 2008 CTS sedan. Inspired by the Cadillac Sixteen concept, the latest CTS features two six-speed transmissions, a new direct-injection 3.6-litre V6 - one of three engine choices - and the choice of either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive.

This is the first time that rear-wheel or all-wheel drive is offered. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and drivers have the choice between the two transmissions. The six-speed auto is the same that appears in the STS-V, XLR-V and Escalade. It allows clutchless shifting for those who want a little more control.

Style-wise, the '08 CTS uses a grille that was inspired by the Sixteen concept. The grille is 'more vertical, dual-textured and dramatic ... it is also more sophisticated, faceted and three-dimensional' according to Cadillac. Fans of the most recent generation of CTS will notice that the new CTS has a more 'fast', coupe-like appearance. The sedan features standard 17-inch aluminum wheels with 17-inch tires, with 18-inch wheels and tires coming standard with the performance suspension.

Inside, the CTS has a technology-laden cockpit, with heated and ventilated 'thin-seats', white ambient LED backlighting on the door pulls, foot well and recessed between the upper and lower instrument panels, standard cruise and audio controls on the steering wheel, a 40 GB hard drive system, a Bose 5.1 surround sound audio system and integrated MP3/iPod capability. The CTS also gets adaptive headlighting and heated washer fluid system.

There is also a lot to be said about the safety features in the CTS, which include six standard airbags (with segment-first dual-depth front passenger air bag), four-channel ABS, Stabilitrak and larger brakes.

The new 3.6-litre engine produces 304-horsepower and 277 lb.-ft. of torque. The other engine choices are a 3.6-litre V6 (without direct injection) and a 2.8-litre V6.
