If you want to be the most powerful production Bentley ever made, you first have to compete with the 552-horsepower Continental GT.

No problem for the Continental GT Speed.

The GT Speed produces 600-horsepower and is also the first production vehicle from the carmaker to top 322 km/h.

The Continental GT Speed uses a uniquely-tuned chassis that delivers tauter handling and improved agility. It rides on standard 20-inch performance tires that were developed by Pirelli specifically for the GT Speed. Carbon ceramic brakes are optional, though the standard brakes are still the largest on any production car built today (front are 405mm in diamater and 36 mm thick, rear are 335 mm. in diamter and 22mm thick, all are ventilated discs). Other design touches that set the 'Speed' version apart from the regular Continental GT include a dark-tinted front grille and larger sports tailpipes.

It also has improved steering response thanks to a retuned speed-sensitive system and stiffer rear bushings. A lower ride height than that of the Continental GT also helps with the car's agility. Keep in mind, this model is also 77 lbs. lighter than last year's version, thanks to 'optimisation of suspension and cooling system components'.

Suspensions on both Continental GT versions this year use double wishbones at the front and a trapezoidal multi-link system at the rear. Bentley notes that much of the suspension is made from lightweight aluminum. The GT Speed features modified front and rear anti-roll bars to minimise understeer and optimise handling balance.

The 'Speed', which weighs in at 5,190 lbs., has a 0-100 km/h time of 4.5 seconds, and moves from 80-120 km/h in 3.0 seconds flat. It has a 2745 mm. wheelbase and overall length of 4804 mm.

The W12 engine in the GT Speed has been optimized for its increased power and performance. It uses lighter weight con rods that enhance engine response, while new pistons are designed to withstand increased cylinder pressures. The engine produces 553 lb.-ft. of torque at only 1,750 rpm. The engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission that allows for clutchless manual shifts via the shifter or steering wheel paddles.

In addition, the Continental GT Speed takes advantage of an all-wheel drive system that uses a central Torsen differential and a differential on both the front and rear axles providing a standard 50:50 torque split. This front to rear ratio is variable depending on the available grip, and the system can sense slip of less than one percent and react by apportioning the engine's torque to either the front or rear axle.

The GT Speed's interior is based on the Mulliner Driving Specification (an option on the standard GT) which includes one of several veneers, Diamond-quilted hide seats with an embroidered Bentley emblem, a sports alloy gearlever, three-spoke steering wheel, drilled alloy foot-pedals, and 'Speed' logos on the treadplates.
