They won’t say so, but Infiniti made the 2008 G37 Coupe for golfers.

They must have. It’s the only car I’ve run across that actually has a trunk label showing how to load two golf bags into the trunk — without dropping the rear seatback to make room.

Heck, you could pack those two golf bags and a couple of small sport bags and go away for a weekend.

However, if that weekend meant driving anywhere, I’ll wager the golf bags would stay in the trunk because you aren’t going to want to get out of this thing. The only driving you’ll want to do is with the steering wheel, so the best thing is keep the golf bags, drop the seatback, toss in a couple of suitcases and make it a longer voyage.

The designers have been smart and not messed too much with the G35 look that made the brand a contender in the sport coupe market. The car is longer, lower and wider and the lines and interior have been refined, to be sure, but the old look has not been eliminated.

G37 is built on a revised version of Nissan's FM (Front Midship) platform which is 35% more rigid that the G35 coupe.

But the big story, other than the golf bag label, is the power under the hood. As you might expect, the “37” stands for displacement — 3.7 litres. Coupled with VVEL (variable valve event and lift) and increased compression, horsepower has been boosted to a very enthusiastic 330 at 7,000 rpm (up 55 from the G35) while torque is now 270 lb.-ft., a mere 2 lb.-ft. over the previous model, but peak torque is available over a much wider rev range.

That torque curve needs to start sooner, though; the engine doesn’t like being asked to get up and go if the rpm are under 1500; put your foot down in top gear and nothing is going to happen. It won’t happen in fifth either. In fourth you get a glimmer. Dropping it to third achieves escape velocity that will push you back into the seat cushion.

Standard shifting is a five-speed automatic with sport shift mode that will match rev downshift, making it sound like there’s a manual shifter at work. If you’re more interested in mechanics than sound, you can do your own rev matching with the six-speed manual box that slips from gear to gear quickly with a nice positive action.

Available in Premium and Sport models, with various levels of tech content, the new G coupe starts at $47,350 and tops out at $55,635.

Premium gives you all the power goodies, leather upholstery with heated front seats, power sunroof and a killer 11-speaker Bose audio system. Sport models get a different, more aggressive front fascia, paddle shifters for the automatic transmission, stiffer suspension and bigger wheels. You can opt for the six-speed manual without boosting your price tag.

If you want to go all out, you can order four-wheel active steering (4WAS), which will steer the rear wheels up to 1 degree in the same direction as the front wheels.

With or without 4WAS, this coupe puts considerable “gee” into the driving experience. Cornering is precise and flat with minimal body lean.

Coupes with the sport package also get huge 14-in. brake rotors with four-piston calipers up front and 13.8-in. rotors and two-piston calipers in back. Talk about whoa-power.

Inside, you find Infiniti’s “double wave” instrument panel with that signature analogue clock and full-length centre console. An aluminum-alloy trim runs across the instrument panel, on the centre console and on the door panels. An integrated multi-function information display gives average fuel consumption, real-time fuel economy, average speed, elapsed time, running distance, distance to empty, outside air temperature, warning displays, odometer and automatic transmission shift indicator. The drivers grips a double hand-stitched leather-covered steering wheel with wheel-mounted audio and cruise controls. The coupe with sports package adds magnesium paddle shifters for the automatic transmission.

The car made my eyes happy and my ears happy. It even made my butt happy when I settled into the leather sports seat. Sport coupes have 14-way power adjustable seats with thing extensions and power adjustable torso and thigh bolsters.
