Honda brought Accord to Canada in 1976 and each succeeding generation has been a move forward for the popular model which seems to sell of (if you’ll pardon the pun) its own accord.

Now the eighth edition of the popular sedan and coupe are here showing off improvements the company touts as “green, safe and fun.”

The new car is certainly larger. The sedan is three inches longer, nearly an inch taller and 1.1 inches wider than the previous car, meaning there’s more room for legs, feet, hips and shoulders inside.

The coupe is 3.1 inches longer, 1.5 inches wider and just under an inch taller than the previous coupe. Its style is completely different than the sedan with unique body panels, glass and lighting. The nose is more aggressive and the stance more muscular than the sedan.

In either configuration, the new car has an attractive exterior, but I have to say the coupe struck “a chord” even if it has less rear seat leg room.

Accord’s interior is a study in the simplistic presentation of a large feature content. Everything you need is there, easy to find, simple to operate and within easy reach. I wasn’t all that enamoured with the seating in previous Accords; now my butt is much happier and so is my back. (You can even warm them up.)

For the driver, operational instruments are located on top of the cluster with information-related data lower down. At night, climate controls are aqua green and audio controls are white.

Steering wheel-mounted audio controls are standard across the lineup.

The reworked interior space is inviting and actually feels larger than it is. Visibility is excellent, but I’d rather see things from the front than the rear of the coupe.

You can get things like a new generation of Honda’s bilingual voice-activated nav system which uses Bluetooth HandsFreeLink for the first time in a Honda.

The fun side of the equation began with the company’s selection of the varied roads around Halifax to show off the new coupe and sedan.

Although two four-cylinder engines are available, all the test vehicles were equipped with the new 3.5-litre V6 engine, a veritable rocket, producing 268 horses with 248 ft. lb. of torque. Step on the throttle and response is quick, with only a slight torque-steer on the coupe I drove. I did not notice torque-steer in the sedan.

The coupe came with a slick six-speed manual transmission while the sedan V6 was coupled with a six-speed automatic.

I suspect the four-cylinder engines are equally impressive, if a little less energetic. The base engine turns out 177 horsepower while the EX and EX-L models get a 190-horsepower four-banger.

The ride over the twisty, uneven and sometimes broken pavement, was well-modulated although the coupe, as might be expected, had a somewhat stiffer ride.

Honda’s ACE body structure appears in Accord for the first time and provides a stiff basis for all the nifty handling pieces, including a variable gear ratio (VGR) steering system that provides quick, linear response to driver requests.

Cornering, even in the sedan, is very flat with little body roll or dive. Bring on the twisties – there’s fun to be had here.

On the safety side, this is the first time four-wheel disc brakes are standard across the lineup. Vehicle Stability Assist is also standard on every Accord for the first time.

There are six air bags aboard the new Accord: dual-stage, dual-threshold driver and front passenger bags, side curtain airbags and dual-chamber front side airbags with passenger position detection system. Traction control, tire pressure monitor and ABS with brake assist are also standard.

The sedan is available in LX, EX, EX-L and EX-L V6 trim. The EX-L models are available with Honda navigation system.

The Accord coupe comes in EX, EX-L and EX-L V6.

The green side is achieved through lower emissions and improved fuel economy figures for both four-cylinder and V6 engines.

The company expects to sell 24,000 sedans and 4,000 coupes.
