QUEBEC CITY — The 2007 SX4 hatchback helped Suzuki Canada grow its market share by 26.6% in 2006 and has fueled a 16.1% increase in the year to date. It has accounted for 3,511 of the 8,525 vehicles sold by the Japanese automaker thus far in 2007.

So, knowing that sedans outsell hatchbacks by a 3:1 ratio in the compact segment, Bill Porter, Suzuki Canada VP of sales and marketing, is ecstatic over the arrival of the 2008 SX4 sedan in this country.

It gives the company yet another weapon with which to battle Japanese rivals Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Mazda in the fiercely competitive compact segment that last year accounted for 47% of all new Canadian car sales.

Porter is confident the SX4, and new vehicles such as a pickup truck arriving next fall, will help Suzuki Canada reach its sales targets of 13,000 units this calendar year and 15,000 in 2008.

In fact, he believes they may have to negotiate with the parent company for more than the 6,500 SX4s they’ve been allotted for 2008.

It’s a happy predicament for the company that, while ranking 15th in the Canadian market, is first in India and Hungary and No. 3 in Japan behind only Toyota and Honda.

The sedan platform, which is 15% stiffer than the hatchback, has undergone extensive testing in Europe where much time was spent on suspension tuning to give the car a sporty feel.

Powertrain for the sedan is identical to that in the hatchback — a 2.0-litre DOHC inline four connected to either a five-speed stick or four-speed automatic. The sturdy little engine produces 143 hp at 5,800 rpm — better than Toyota Corolla, Nissan Versa or Honda Civic — and 136 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,500. Suzuki claims a 0-60 mph time of 10.2 seconds.

SX4 sedans will be offered in two trim levels, Base and Sport. Base cars start at $17,195 with the stick and $18,295 with automatic, ride on 16-in. wheels and come with standard halogen headlamps, power windows and locks, remote entry, tachometer and manual air conditioning.

Sport models, which start at $18,995 with the manual transmission and $20,095 for automatic, get upgrades such as wide P205 tires, 17-in. alloy wheels, automatic climate control, heated outside mirrors, four-wheel disc brakes, cruise control and an attractive aero body kit.

All models are equipped with antilock brakes (ABS) with brake assist (BA) and electronic brake-force distribution (EBD). And even base cars get front airbags, seat-mounted side airbags for driver and front passenger plus side curtain airbags. Front seat belts offer the added protection of pre-tensioners and load limiters in the event of a collision.

Even though almost 40% of SX4 hatchback buyers in Canada have selected the four-wheel-drive option, it will not be available on the sedan. Suzuki’s bosses believe sedan buyers are a different breed of cat and, judging by their lack of success with a four-wheel-drive Aerio sedan a few years ago, they may be right.

But many Canadian sedan buyers still hit the slopes or play hockey and the SX4 sedan does not offer a folding rear seat to accommodate long items such as skis or sticks. However, at 439 litres (15.5 cu. ft.), it does have the biggest trunk in its class. The wedge shape is not just a pleasing design. It helps give the SX4 sedan more cabin space than Corolla, Civic and Versa.

The interior design is clean and efficient and the low dashboard and beltline give the driver outstanding outward vision. In what Suzuki calls “in command” seating, the height of the front seats are positioned midway between that of a sedan and an SUV. It not only works, but is extremely comfortable too.

For those drivers who can’t leave home without their entire music collection, optional kits for iPods or MP3 players plug into the back of the radio. While this may seem inconvenient at first, compared to a simple jack on the radio face, the reasoning behind it is sound. This system enables your iPod to mount in the glove box, where its out of sight of those with no hesitation to smash and grab.

The SX4 sedan is relatively peppy, relatively quiet and a smooth performer at superhighway speeds. And with its nimble handling it won’t get lost in traffic.

With its high level of standard equipment it’s a player in the crowded compact field.
