Here’s the question that all Audi dealers hate to answer: “What do you have in a two-door coupe?” Unless the buyer wanted a TT or an R8, and let’s face it, who wouldn’t, let’s just say the coupe lineup for Audi is a little thin.

That has all changed now with the introduction of the latest offering from Audi, which is a two door sport coupe — the Audi S5.

“An athlete in a tailored suit,” is how Diego Ramos, executive vice-president of Audi Canada describes the all-new 2008 Audi S5 coupe. “Offering outstanding performance and sportiness in a classic format, the new Audi S5 is both a powerful sports car and an elegant gran tourismo. The S5, like all new Audis, perfectly mirrors our corporate philosophy of ‘Vorsprung durch Technik’ by being sporty, sophisticated and progressive.”

The first thing that strikes you about the new S5 is the styling. Yes, you can see the traditional Audi lines up front in the grille and headlights. The side view is all new, and has a beautifully swept look to it, which leads to a fairly familiar looking rear end.

Inside, the S5’s interior resembles the layout from the A4 or A6, but its upgraded styling adds to the elegant feel and look of the car.

The new seats not only look good, they fit well.

My time with the new S5 was limited, but I can tell you that the 4.2-litre V8 FSI engine, which is mounted longitudinally, puts out 354 hp — that’s the sport part of a sport coupe. Its peak torque is 243 lb.-ft., which it delivers at 3,250 rpm.

The FSI direct injection technology, with high compression and optimum fuel mixture formation makes the S5 pull very smoothly without being harsh, especially from low in the rev range. That powerplant, coupled to Audis Quattro all-wheel-drive system, makes the S5 as sure-footed as they come in all types of weather.

The manual six-speed features a short, solid throw that has a great precise feel to it. Sometimes you get that "is it third or fifth?" feeling, but the S5’s gearbox is precise in letting you know exactly what gear you are in just by the feel.

The brakes are fantastic, and even repeatedly hard stops showed no fade whatsoever. The S5 is also very well balanced when pushed hard. A good sharp turn-in and power on demand make the S5 easy to drive, well, lets just say, "sportingly."

If you are going sportingly these days, especially in Ontario, it’s a good idea to have the occasional gander behind you. That is really when I noticed the mirrors in the S5. They are big, and offer a good view of what you just went past, or what might be gaining on you.

After driving the S5, I think it is exactly what Ramos said. Have you ever seen a bodybuilder in a dress shirt? That’s what it reminds me of. The outside design has just enough of a look or aura to it that you know something serious lays underneath.

As I drove around in the S5, I couldn’t help but think of what the S5 will do for Audi. It really is the last on the to-do list for the company.

The S5 will be followed up by the A5 in early 2008, which is kind of strange in a way. Normally the “regular” model is introduced first, then the “sport” model follows later. I for one, am glad they let us have this one first.

The Audi lineup is now complete. From the ultimate sports car in the R8, to the base A3, Audi dealers now offer products to fit anyone’s possible needs.

Just think, now the dealers have an answer to that question — or any question, for that matter.
