Land Rover's SUVs have a reputation for being able to do just about anything, anywhere.

Now, they can even drive themselves.

A new fully autonomous LR3 has been developed thanks to Land Rover and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) joining forces. This means the LR3 can operate completely on its own, without the assistance of either a driver or even a remote control.

The autonomous LR3 uses LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) range finders with vision sensors to view surrounding object and help it avoid obstacles that might get in its way. In order to track its progress along the roads, the vehicle uses a combination of GPS (Global Positioning System) and INS (Inertial Navigation System).

By grouping these technologies, the LR3 can navigate itself while avoiding anything that might get in its way. The vehicle can locate itself within half of a meter anywhere in the world, giving it the ability to stay on the road at all times.

The LR3 will be used to compete at the DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) Urban Challenge, which pits autonomous vehicles against each other in several different competitions. Some of these tasks include executing simulated supply missions while merging into moving traffic, navigating traffic circles, negotiating busy intersections and avoiding various obstacles. During the competition, the vehicles will need to traverse through a 60-mile mock city course within six hours.

The vehicle has already successfully completed the qualifying rounds in the Summer of 2007. The semifinals follow that and the winners then go on to the finals which take place in Victorville, California.
