ROMEO, Mich. — Ford still may be trying to find its way back in the passenger car field, which it all but abandoned a few years ago, but it sure knows what the public wants from its pickup trucks.

Especially the F-Series Super Duty trucks.

For 2008 you can get Super Duty pickups in three varieties: F-250 with single rear wheels and gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWRs) from 8,000-10,000 lb.; F-350 with single rear wheels and GVWRs between 9,600 and 11,500 lb.; F-350 with dual rear wheels and GVWRs between 1,500 and 13,000 lb.; and the new F-450 with dual rear wheels and a GVWR of 14,500 lb.

Although gasoline engines are available, from a 300-hp V8 to a 362-hp V10, all of the Super Duty trucks we drove at the proving grounds here were powered by Ford’s new 6.4-litre Power Stroke turbo diesel.

Ford says 80% of buyers will choose this engine and 72% will opt for four-wheel drive.

The smooth, clean-burning V8 delivers 350 hp at 3,000 rpm and puts out massive amounts of torque — 650 lb.-ft. (on F-250 and F-350) at 2,000 rpm. Particulate emissions are now on par with gasoline engines and are 97% less than with the previous model year’s 6.0-litre diesel.

As diesel chief engineer Rick Renwick put it, “You’ll never see black soot coming out the tailpipe with this engine.”

In meeting more stringent U.S. government emissions regulations, the 6.4 is not only more eco-friendly but also more powerful thanks to a new high pressure common rail fuel delivery system, a series sequential turbocharger, four valves per cylinder and a dual timing system. It’s also designed to run quieter than previous diesels with fuel injectors now located under the valve cover.

The Super Duty’s new hydroformed front structure not only helps reduce noise and vibration in the cabin, but has allowed Ford engineers to hang a beefier cooling system on it with 30.3 litres of capacity — bigger than either Chevy or Dodge — and able to pump 473 litres per minute vs. 265-303 for the opposition.

Nowhere is the new diesel’s low-end power more evident than when trailering — an activity in which 90% of Super duty owners engage.

Equipped with a fifth wheel, the F-450 can haul a 24,000-lb. trailer or 16,000 lb. using the trailer hitch.

Among the many Super Duty innovations for 2008:

  • A video camera mounted on the tailgate release handle that’s activated when you shift into reverse and allows you to precisely line up the truck’s hitch with a trailer via a small screen integrated into the rearview mirror. It works. On my first try, I got the hitch’s ball within two inches of being perfect.
  • Industry-first power operated trailer-tow side mirrors that fold and telescope at the touch of a button on the driver’s door. The main mirror is power adjustable and the smaller spotter mirror can be adjusted manually.
  • An industry-first integrated tailgate step that’s such a good idea you have you wonder why no one’s thought of it before. With the tailgate in the down position, all you do is grab the step, pull it out and drop it into the step position, where it can support 350 lb. As well, a grab-handle folds up out of a channel in the tailgate to provide extra support when climbing into the pickup box. The tailgate liner also has a non-slip surface.
  • An integral, stowable bed extender that, unlike others, separates into two pieces that fold and snap securely to the sides of the bed when not needed.
  • Ford’s TowCommand system, which includes the industry’s first factory-installed electronic trailer brake controller, with controls conveniently located in the centre stack.

 

You can, of course, tailor your Super Duty pickup six ways to Sunday with a choice of cabs, axle ratios, bed lengths and drivetrains.

While the basic truck in XL trim is REALLY basic — full bench seat, manually operated windows, AM/FM radio with two speakers, black vinyl floor covering and no air conditioning — you can add power and convenience items as you climb through the trim levels: XLT, FX4 and Lariat.

In fact, there are more options and equipment packages than with any range of cars I can think of.

Option one out any way you like to meet your tastes, needs and budget, but toughness isn’t something you can add on — it’s built right in.
