It may have the same engine under the hood, but the new Viper SRT10 ACR is a whole different beast from the 'plain Jane' SRT10.

The ACR version (that stands for 'American Club Racer', by the way) is a street-legal, track-ready bohemoth that is powered by the same giant 8.4-litre aluminum V10 engine in the original 2008 SRT10. Both models produce 600-horsepower and 560 lbs.-ft. of torque, but the ACR Viper weighs up to 80 lbs. less than the other SRT10.

To make sure the SRT10 ACR was track-ready, engineers gave it an even tighter suspension that includes coil-over racing dampers from KW Suspensions that are adjustable for damping and ride height. The shocks are two-way adjustable without removing the wheels — a timersaver on the track — and they include a large range for compression and rebound.

To reduce weight, engineers used carbon-fibre wherever and whenever possible, including the splitter and dive planes which feature a clear-coated carbon-fiber weave. The rear wing helps to improve the coupe's aerodynamics, and it too is made of lightweight carbon fibre.

The interior follows the same weight-saving pattern as the rest of the vehicle. Customers can even order an optional 'Hard Core' package which deletes the audio system, underhood silencer pad, trunk carpet and tire inflator. The radio is replaced by a lightweight cover that can be configured to mount the included lap timer. The door speakers are replaced by carbon-fiber panels. The Hard Core package offers a 40 lb. weight savings.

The 8.4-litre engine is equipped with Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC)-shaped combustion chambers, large valves and variable valve timing, allowing the engine to breath more efficiently. The engine is mated to a six-speed manual transmission and power is transmitted to the rear wheels via a speed-sensing limited-slip differential.

The Viper SRT10 ACR is available in five colours - Viper Red, Viper Black, Viper Violet, Viper Bright Blue Metallic and Viper Very Orange. Of course, the vehicle is available with dual painted Viper stripes.

The Viper SRT10 ACR will be available in the second quarter of 2008.
