Porsche is moving full steam ahead with plans for a new hybrid version of its Cayenne SUV, with the company releasing new information about the vehicle at the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show.

Porsche says that it's targetting fuel consumption numbers of 9.8 L/100 km. in the Cayenne hybrid. Though these are ambitious numbers on their own, engineers are actually pushing for even better numbers than that in the future.

The Cayenne hybrid will feature a full-hybrid design where the hybrid module (clutch and electric motor) is positioned between the combustion engine and the transmission. Porsche selected this design because the in-line configuration of the hybrid components is more compatible with the existing Cayenne platform. In addition, this system in testing was more fuel efficient, and Porsche says it will provide improved acceleration and engine flexibility compared to a conventional Cayenne.

Porsche even has a name for the system that powers the three main components of the hybrid system. Called the Hybrid Manager, it oversees approximately 20,000 data parameters as compared to only 6,000 data parameters for a conventional engine, and is one of the most powerful technologies found in any hybrid vehicle according to Porsche.

There are other ways in which the engineers managed to reduce fuel consumption. The power steering and vacuum pump for the brakes, as well as the air conditioning, work on electric power. The oil pump in the Cayenne's automatic transmission has been replaced by electrically powered units, and the company says the Cayenne hybrid's electro-hydraulic steering will 'ensure the Cayenne Hybrid drives like a Porsche with predictable and safe handling characteristics and the agility that is expected of a Porsche SUV.'

A similar system will be used in a hybrid version of the 2009 Porsche Panamera four-door Gran Turismo.
