The 80's TV show Knight Rider featured one of the most famous cars to ever appear on television, and Ford is set to take over driving duties when the new made-for-TV Knight Rider movie hits the small screen in February 2008.

The original KITT has gone from being a Pontiac Trans-Am (which has since been discontinued) to a wicked-looking Ford Shelby GT500KR, and will be voiced by none other than Val Kilmer. The voice role was originally going to go to Will Arnett (of 'Arrested Development' fame), but he was asked to withdraw due to his work on General Motors commercials.

The vehicle was made by Galpin Auto Sports (GAS), which is well-known for creating one-of-a-kind vehicles in the California market.

The new KITT will appear in one of three 'modes' at different times in the movie - the standard GT500KR 'Hero' mode, 'Attack' mode which is even more over-the-top and further modified with a new rear bumper cover, two-tiered spoiler, side scoops and custom rocker panels and a completely modified interior to accommodate creative needs, shooting and post production computer graphics. and a Camouflage mode, which is fairly self-explanatory. The Hero version produces 540-horsepower and the new KITT uses an automatic transmission to help with the driving scenes, stunts and camera work necessary for an action movie like 'Knight Rider'.

The Attack version was made by Harold Belker who is also responsible for the vehicles in movies like Armageddon, Spider-Man, Minority Report, XXX, and Superman.

This isn't the first movie in recent months that has featured a Mustang prominently. Will Smith raced through a disease-ridden New York in a Ford Shelby GT500 in 'I Am Legend', which was released in December, 2007.

Al Uzielli, who is a senior advisor to Ford Global Brand Entertainment, said that "(his) understanding is that NBC was heavily pursued by both GM and Chrysler" to produce the new version of KITT, but Ford won out because they had the right logistics and their advertising agency had strong contacts on the business side and our team at Ford Global Brand Entertainment had a close relationship with the creative side including the new head of NBC Entertainment Ben Silverman."

NBC says that it plans to turn the show into a weekly series if the movie's ratings are high enough.
