Ford may have recently fallen to third in U.S. sales in 2007 to Toyota, but things are still looking up for the blue oval as 2008 begins.

Both Bill Ford and new CEO Alan Mullaly were all smiles as they helped introduce the new 2009 F-150 pickup at the 2008 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, which has plenty of smart features like tailgate and side box steps to help people load cargo into the truck bed. They promised it would be more than capable in terms of towing and hauling as well, though they didn't go so far as to give specific numbers. They hinted that full specs may be released at the Chicago Auto Show in February 2008.

Also on display was the Canadian-built Ford Flex, which will be going on sale later in 2008, a slew of different Mustang models ("A steed for every need") and the Verve concept, shown in two bodystyles. The sedan is most likely to be sold in the U.S., though the automaker brought the 3-door to the auto show to gauge reaction. Ford says Verve will be the first of many vehicles designing to be sold globally.

Ford's Chief Creative Officer J Mays told media after the conference that Verve is about two years away from full production. He adds that though Verve is a small car meant to be affordable, Ford wants to stay away from its being looked at as an 'econobox'. He was adamant that Verve would be a high quality vehicle that would still have a low cost. He also added that Verve was a cool moniker for the concept, but it may just have the name 'Fiesta' on it when it finally comes out.
