The minivan market is about to get even more crowded, with European automaker Volkswagen announcing the seven-passenger Routan, which will be a joint venture with Chrysler.

Though it will be built by Chrysler in Windsor, Ontario, VW is touting the Routan's European styling and handling, saying its steering has been optimized for handling and improved driving dynamics.

The Routan comes equipped with a standard 3.8-litre V6, which produces 197-horsepower and 230 lbs.-ft. of torque, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. A 4.0-litre that produces 251-horsepower and 259 lbs.-ft. of torque will be available as well.

Volkswagen says this minivan's interior will include plenty of high quality material and 'superb' fit and finish. Safety-wise, the Routan comes standard with traction control and electronic stability program.

Passengers will never have to worry about a lack of places to keep their drinks, as the Routan comes standard with 13 cupholders. Other features on the Routan include:

  • Conversation Mirror
  • Rear seat entertainment system with two 9-inch screens for second and third row,
  • wireless headsets, and remote control
  • Dual power sliding doors with power windows
  • Touch screen navigation with twenty MB hard drive
  • Power lift gate with flood lamp
