Acura is doing a heck of a lot to have its flagship RL sedan compete with the big boys in the segment.

The luxury arm of Honda has unveiled its latest generation RL, and it's bigger, more powerful and - true to the Acura name - has even more advanced technological features to keep tech-savvy customers happy.

"RL represents the very best we have to offer in terms of engineering, technology, performance, luxury and safety", said Dick Colliver, executive vice president, sales. "It's designed for a new generation of performance-luxury buyers looking to travel more quickly, more efficiently and more connected to the world around them."

One of these tech features that truly connects drivers is AcuraLink weather. As one could probably guess, the weather feature gives the driver constantly updated real-time weather conditions using a GPS-based solar-sensing climate control system. The 2009 RL also uses a new note function for XM satellite radio, and bluetooth audio, along with an audio system that comes with a USB port.

The same 3.7-litre V6 engine can be found in all new RLs. This new engine develops 300-horsepower and 271 lbs.-ft. of torque and reduces emissions over last year's engine. The 5-speed automatic transmission that the V6 is mated to also uses F1-style steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

Returning this year on the RL is Acura's Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD), which utilizes torque vectoring to increase the rotation speed of an outside rear wheel during aggressive cornering to help the car turn more effectively while under power. This type of all-wheel drive reduces the cornering load on the front tires to minimize understeer and to improve handling balance.

The RL still uses a fully-independent suspension to allow for a comfortable ride. The 2009 model uses larger diameter stabalizer bars and improved steering rack components. The larger 18-inch wheels also help with handling.

When you are driving the RL aggressively, it's good to know that there are a slew of safety features on the vehicle, from the ACE body structure, which distributes cabin deformation in a collision away from the passenger compartment, to a new active head restraint system, which helps improve neck and head protection when a rear collision occurs.

The RL also includes as standard, safety belt reminders, six airbags, and a tire pressure monitoring system.

The interior of the RL has all kinds of small touches to make it more appealing to passengers. The front seat belts are easier to use, the lettering for the HVAC controls are larger and clearer, and climate controls are easier to use. The steering wheel has also been revised and can be ordered with genuine wood trim. To further show off the changes made to the interior to give it a more luxurious feel, Acura incorporated brushed metal accents and upgraded gauges, as well as additional insulation, a more high-tech design of Acura's acoustic glass windshield, and a new Active Sound Control (ASC) system, which work in tandem to reduce noise in the RL's cabin.

Depending on the trim level and package you may choose, the RL has many more available features, including: adaptive cruise control, active front lighting system, collision mitigation braking system, ventilated front seats,
