Europeans love their wagons, and that's a good thing for North Americans, as Audi has announced that the new 2009 A4 Avant will be coming to both Europe and North America in 2008.

The new A4 Avant will be exclusively offered in the United States with 100% quattro all-wheel drive, as well as one engine, a turbocharged 4-cylinder.

The Avant version is based on the next-generation A4 sedan. Audi describes it as 'dynamic, elegant and emotional'. The vehicle is promised to have the same excellent driving dynamics as the sedan model, but with improved functionality thanks to the large cargo area.

There will be five engines initially available for the A4 Avant at launch in other non-North American markets - two gasoline and three diesel. Audi says that fuel consumption will be reduced by up to 14 per cent compared to the outgoing model.

The design itself of the A4 Avant is truly a highlight of the vehicle. Like many other recently-released Audis, the A4 Avant's headlights are especially stunning, as they feature 14 white light-emitting diodes.

The vehicle's proportions have been reconfigured to give it a sportier design. The flat D-posts lend the Audi A4 Avant a coupe-like silhouette, while the rear design emphasizes its width with powerful, horizontal lines. The new A4 Avant measures 4.70 meters (15.42 feet) in length, almost 12 centimeters (4.72 inches) longer than its forerunner model. Its body is considerably more rigid and safer in build than its predecessor according to Audi, yet it's also about 10 percent lighter.

The A4 Avant will be a traveller's haven thanks to other amenities such as a cargo cover that retracts at a touch, an electro-mechanical drive for the rear tailgate and tie-down eyelets for securing luggage.

The rest of the interior is very much Audi, from the logical design, to the high-quality materials, to the driver-oriented cockpit. In fact, Audi says it borrows a lot from its bigger brother the A8, right down to the electro-mechanical parking brake, which replaces the previous A4's manual parking brake.

Even the climate control system has been redesigned, as it supplies 10 percent more cooling capacity, yet operates more efficiently than the previous system, saving about 0.2 liters of fuel per 100 km.

The optional Audi drive select control system accesses various technology components, depending on different upgrades the customer can choose from. In the basic version, it influences the engine’s gas intake, the tiptronic shifting points, the multitronic and the power steering as well as the steering angle of the steering wheel. By pressing a button, the driver can choose between a 'sport', 'average' or 'comfort' mode. If the car is equipped with the MMI operating system, a fourth, individually programmable mode is available.

There is also a dynamic steering system that the A4 Avant uses that varies the steering ratio continuously by almost 100 percent depending on the speed driven.

Other high-tech systems that are available on the A4 Avant include park assist, lane departure warning, side assist (which warns of hazards when changing lanes) and adaptive cruise control.
