Mercedes-Benz seems to constantly be at the forefront of automotive technology, and it looks to continue that trend by leaping ahead of its competitors again in 2008 thanks to its new hybrid vehicle.

The S400 BlueHybrid will feature a gasoline powerplant mated to an electric motor that is powered by a lithium-ion battery pack - the first time ever that a vehicle has been equipped with one.

The advantages of using the lithium-ion battery compared to the usual nickel-metal hydride found in other hybrids is that the former has very compact dimensions, superior performance, a long service life, and great reliability even at very low temperatures. Its high level of safety is equal to that provided by today's auto batteries according to Mercedes. Theoretically, that annoying bump that cuts off much of the trunk space in most hybrid vehicles could become a thing of the past thanks to the use of a smaller lithium-ion battery pack.

The S400 specifically has a fuel economy rating of 7.9 L/100 km., which makes it the most fuel-efficient luxury sedan in the world according to Mercedes-Benz. That being said, it will still have 299-horsepower on tap when the gasoline engine is combined with the electric motor. It will be able to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 7.3 seconds and has an electronically-controlled speed of 250 km/h.

Mercedes-Benz says that it is also researching how the lithium-ion battery technology can be used in other future vehicle concepts such as electric and fuel cell-powered cars.
