Nothing really new in the form of cars was expected from Subaru at the 2008 Geneva Show. However, many were surprised by the unveiling of a brand new powertrain, the first of its kind for a production vehicle.

Subaru presented, for all to see, an all-new horizontally-opposed four-cylinder turbodiesel engine under the bonnets of a Legacy and an Outback. This common-rail injected engine develops 150 hp and 258 lb.-ft. of torque.

In the short run, this extremely frugal (5.6 litres per 100 km) and torque-heavy engine option will not be offered in North America. And, according to the Japanese carmaker, because of the demand for diesel powertrains being what it is on this side of the Pond, we will probably never get it.
