Calling it the “safest car Volvo has ever built” is setting the bar pretty high for a manufacturer whose name is synonymous with safety, but that’s what Volvo is claiming for its newest crossover.

The XC60, as you might imagine, is slotted into the lineup just below the XC70, to give you an idea of its size. It features a sporty suspension, comfortable interior (particularly focused on the driver’s seat) and a low slung station wagon body. The vehicle will use Volvo’s new City Safety system, which is designed to detect and avoid low-speed crashes. It will actually apply its own brakes if it feels a collision is imminent.

Eerie but definitely cutting edge, we look forward to seeing it on our side of the pond. The car is scheduled for a nearly split in distribution between Europe and North America (roughly 40-40, with the remaining twenty percent going to the rest of the world.
