For anyone who is still mourning the passing of the Chevrolet El Camino, General Motors has something of a spiritual successor coming in 2010.

The Pontiac G8 Sport Truck will be based on the new G8 sedan coming in 2009, but will feature a cargo bed and a sleek, coupe-like look to create something that looks very similar to the famed El Camino. The rear-wheel drive car will be built on a uni-body frame and will still be rear-wheel drive, just like the G8 sedan.

One aspect of the car that isn't complete is its name. GM says that consumers will have a chance to choose the final name of the G8 Sport Truck.

One thing we do know is what will be under the hood. It will have the same 6.0-litre V8 found in the G8 GT sedan. It will boast 361-horsepower and 385 lb.-ft. of torque and will have a curb weight just a shade under 4,000 lbs. It will be able to carry a conservative 1,316 lb. payload capacity and will have a trailer towing maximum of 3,500 lbs. The engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The G8 Sport Truck looks sporty as well. Its roofline has a coupe-like profile and flared fenders wrap around the 18-inch wheels to give it a wide stance (19-inch wheels will be come as an option). The rear also features wraparound taillights.

Only two people will be able to fit inside the G8 Sport Truck at a time, but they'll be treated to amenities such as a driver information center, air conditioning with electronic dual-zone climate control, cruise control and power windows, doors and locks. Heated, six-way adjustable leather seats will be available as an option. Behind the seats is an interior cargo area that has more than 8.5-cubic feet of storage space. The vehicle uses a 230-watt Blaupunkt six-disc CD changer sound system that includes an MP3 jack and five speakers.

There are also two covered storage compartments beneath the load floor and a pair of cargo nets.

Safety features include:

  • StabiliTrak electronic vehicle stability system
  • Tire pressure monitoring system
  • Dual-stage frontal air bags with a passenger sensing system
  • Head-curtain side air bags
  • Side thorax air bags
  • Three-point safety belts in all seating positions
  • Safety belt pretensioners
  • OnStar

The G8 Sport Truck will be built in Adelaide, Australia.
