Pontiac is proving you don't need a convertible to have an open-air experience while driving.

The automaker has announced the Pontiac Solstice Coupe for the 2009 model year. Bearing many resemblances to its drop-top sibling, the coupe version features a removable roof panel, opening the cockpit up so that the two occupants can still enjoy all the sights and sounds of a convertible.

The coupe is structurally very similar to the convertible, with the rear fenders and rear fascia the same as those on the convertible. New taillight assemblies, meanwhile, flow more smoothly into the tapered roofline according to GM.

"The Solstice coupe represents a major collaboration of design and engineering," said Bruce Kosbab, chief engineer. "The sleek lines of the new roof give the car a fresh appearance, yet only minimal changes were made to the body structure – it's a great example of building on an already solid foundation."

The coupe is based on the concept shown at the 2002 New York Auto Show, and the production model introduced at the 2008 New York Auto Show is a GXP version, featuring a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-4 engine that produces 260-horsepower and 260 lb-ft. of torque. It can also be fitted with a naturally-aspirated 2.4-litre I-4 as well, which boasts 173-horsepower and 167 lb.-ft. of torque. Both can be mated to either a 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission.

In addition, no suspension changes were made when moving the bodystyle from convertible to coupe, as curb weight only slightly increased. GM says that "initial tests have shown that the Solstice coupe will deliver ride and handling, acceleration, braking and fuel economy comparable to the convertible model."

Luckily for those who need more cargo space than what the Solstice convertible offers (not very much), the area behind the seats was redesigned for easy access to the cargo area, and a storage tray was mounted directly behind the headrests.

The Pontiac Solstice Coupe will be manufactured in Wilmington, Delaware and will be available in early 2009.
